Garbonzos/chick peas: Valuable in mixed dishes, great as hummus, but too firm and irregular to make a top-notch, stand-alone legume, IMO.

Agreed. I've had them in soups and a dish called Marakesh Pasta Salad at Stevens & Stevens Deli (the only true sammichologists in Louisville), But I have never had a big heeping, steaming spoonful of them. I don't think that would be good.
