In short, yes.

You can hope that if you know the person well enough they will laugh after leaving you to hang for an uncomfortable silence where you have to wonder where you fucked up. I've always felt that racism involved intent, but that isn't necessarily true, I can insult somebody by stereotyping without meaning to.

I try to keep it to minimum of five minutes. More than that, and you're off to the next slur about my race, McViking.

However, I agree on the point that words, in and of themselves are not inherently racist.

It's the meaning behind them that holds the weight.

Therefore, I propose that it truly is the manner in which the word is used that can inflict the most harm.
