Manhattan

Post by slushfund »

I had never had a Manhattan, but I just finished reading a book about cocktails, so I thought it was time. It came served straight up in a Martini glass! Is that appropriate? I thought it would be on the rocks in a short glass (whatever they're called)?

Straight up is the way I like 'em. But I've seen them served in rocks glasses.

The Manhattan is probably the world's finest drink.

Bernard DeVoto did not approve of Manhattans. I just found that out when I was looking up his advice on how to make Martinis. He seems to have had a problem with sweet drinks, and sweet things in general, though.

According to him, there are only two permissible cocktails: whiskey on ice, and a Martini made in the proportions 3.7:1, with a twist of lemon rind. He permitted a drop or two of bitters in the former, and higher proportions of gin in the latter, but that's it. Go figure.

When I am in the mood for something sweet, I'll take a Manhattan or two. It's a classic. I just had an idea. Manhattan, lightened with champagne. A new brunch drink. Must go try it now; also, haven't heard Grumpy snore in a while. Am worried.

Try Gallo. It's much better IMO

So, Grumpy still breathing, thank goodness. Tried to make new drinky, discovered all out of bourbon--quelle horreur!, so had to substitute spiced rum. Quite sweet; rather a dessert in a glass. Would definitely get my mom drunk. Good brunch drink, but I'll stick to straight booze tonight, after I finish this one off.

The best vermouth I've come across is Dolin, though it tends to be pricier than most.

Try making the Manhattan with Cognac, you'll thank me later.

Whoa, Kimosabe. I'm thanking you now. You know how good that will be with a bit of snow on the ground and a fire in the hearth?

Well, here we go again with a bunch of fucking nonsense a $5 whore would be ashamed to type.

Gallo? O.K., take the bottle out put it on a stump somewhere and use it for target practice 'cause that's as close as that getto bum shit belongs to a proper Manhatten. Same with your Cognac and every other bullshit ingredient you can dream up.

"Oh, it's like a Cosmo! Or an Appletini!" FUCK YOU, WANKERS!

There's a right way and a wrong way, and a Brown-Forman way, and probably lots of gay queer ways, so play with it any fucking way you want; but Winston Churchill's mom had a hand it it's design, and WHO THE FUCK ARE YOU TO SAY YOU ARE SOMEHOW BETTER THAN THE 19TH CENTUREY EQUIVILENT OF MARY OF NAZARETH?

Jesus? Indeed!
