Seabees, 1973-1977. I even remember a large part of it.

I funneled funds to the CIA and Narco-terrorists. At least that's what conspiracy theorists and anti-drug public service announcements say respectively.BeerMakesMeSmart wrote:I was never, ever in Black Ops.

That's okay, cowards are useful too: without them tyrants rapists and thugs would have a real hard time performing their duties.John Barleycorn wrote:Glad I never got involved with that. I don't believe in risking my life for strangers.

I recently read The Godfather. In it, when Michael, the Godfather's youngest son, comes back from serving in the Pacific theater as a Marine, his father is unhappy that he did all this "for strangers". That's a real headshaker for me. We do not live in a vacuum. We (human beings living on this earth) are all connected to one another. We group ourselves into countries, cities, clubs, families. But we are all human beings living on the planet earth.John Barleycorn wrote:Glad I never got involved with that. I don't believe in risking my life for strangers.

Re: How many of us are ex-military?
I have never served myself but I feel quite appreciative towards those who have. For I have never once, in almost 59yrs of living, gone to bed worried that there might be some other nation's troops kicking down my door the next day (however, the Cuban Missile Crisis @1961 was a bit of something. I wasn't really scared, but I remember my father, who had been wounded a couple of times while fighting in Europe during WWII and my mother, who survived Luftwaffe strafing in England as she went to and from her factory job, both being more serious than usual during that time).Savage Swiller wrote:I recently read The Godfather. I do. Why don't you? Are you afraid? Scared? if you are, I can understand that, if not, how can you sleep at night? there are a lot of people out there right now, most of them you will never meet, some of them don't even speak the same language as you, but - because of them, you can sleep peacefully tonight.John Barleycorn wrote:Glad I never got involved with that. Re: How many of us are ex-military?
before this turns into a shit show, let me just say that some people don't have the fortitude to serve. I am one of them. I would spend the entire time pissing myself plus I'm a lousy shot. That's why conscription or mandatory service is and has always been immoral. It takes people like me(cowards), people like mr. barleycorn (selfish people), the best and bravest volunteers, and possible psychopaths and puts them all on the same team. Then you have something like vietnam. An STD acid and heroin fest, with tons of massacres, and blatant disregard for civilian casualties(I blame kissinger, but lets not get into it) that ends in defeat.
With all that said, as long as the military is all volunteer, I pay my due respect to all of them. They do what others (like me) can't or won't. But expecting military service from everyone is not ideal or sensible.

The worst decision my little girl ever made, was to marry that shitbag jarhead and throw her Marine Corps career away. But at least she can say, Once a Marine, Always a Marine. She'll aways have that.
