Do what you gotta do ...

But I think saying "union workers are bad because they drink booze" is very much booze-related ... though very antithetical to, YA KNOW, the whole point of this board and the sometimes magazine

And now politically ...

I think if you're trying to say that unions make unreasonable demands, I don't think you should choose a company locking out its workers who made $9.4 billion in net profits last year.

Having worked for the state government for the better part of 16 years, I'll leave it at this, Unions are completely necessary. There's good and bad in everything, and from what I've seen, the good unions do protecting employees from their employers when they're wrong, far outweigh the bad. The funny thing is, the news only reports on things like the NYDOE rubber rooms for bad teachers, or bad cops that are hard to fire, you never, ever hear about the state gov overstepping it's own policies and placing blame on it's employers - THEN backing down when union supplied lawyers show up. That somehow never makes the news, and that happens all the time.

That's WHY they engage in such a vitriolic campaign to vilify unions, because unions still serve such an important role in keeping bosses from grinding workers down for more work for less pay.

None of the aforementioned industries are crippled. Their CEO's still make millions and billions of dollars. The problem with unions is that unions keep billionaires from becoming mega-super-duper billionaires.

Setting the hard-working man or woman up with a living wage that allows them to own a house, go to the doctor, buy food, and sit on barstools, and prevents them from having to rely on social safety net programs? Sounds like there's strength in a union to me!

But seriously, are we going to attack unions for preventing bosses from grinding down workers to spend less time in a bar? On a drinking website?

Not on my watch.

I gotta echo Casino on this.

I come from a union household and, at various times, I was a member in good standing of American Federation of Musicians Locals 47 (Los Angeles/CA), 149 (Toronto/CAN) and Teamsters Local 694 (Long Beach/Wilmington/CA).

While any organization that wields economic power is gonna have corruption issues, by and large, unions protect employees from becoming fertilizer for career-blooming management types.

Rank-and-file employees being paid a reasonable living wage will always go farther towards ensuring the quality of life for the majority of Americans than will some executive being able to afford a second summer home.

LOL!

For the most part, except for movies, TV, radio and selected live-performance presentations/venues, the musician's union is a money-taking joke.

I think it's a travesty that the people who freely agreed to take a job can then bond together and claim ownership of the business their employer built.

I think its discrimination that the union reps can tell their constituents all kinds of slander about their greedy, rich bosses, but it is literally against the law for an employer to suggest to an employee that they have the right to vote out their union if their needs aren't being satisfied.

I think it's easier to get distracted by how much your boss makes than it is to study their approach and master a skill set in order to be worth more money. Or go to another employer where one can negotiate a more favorable arrangement.

I think it is the height of greed that unions will fight employers tooth and nail, bringing a flotilla of lawyers and politicians with them to intimidate and harass, and should the employees vote the union out (which does happen from time to time), the union bosses shit on their former contributors out of spite.

I think the fact that a large coalition of unions was fighting to eliminate the voluntary secret ballot process shows them to be cynical and power hungry.

And I think it's foolhardy to declare unions a force of pure malice. Of course they do a lot of good for their employees. Any honest person has to recognize that.

That's just what I think. I have many dear friends who are proud union members, and some who are union bosses. Just let's not pretend they're above gaming the system to the advantage of the union brass, off the sweat of all our brows.

Where and when did that occur? The story you referenced in support of the strike mentioned that those who read the story might be getting ready to drink in a bar, but was there ever an argument against union workers drinking in a bar (while on strike or not, on work or not?)?
Your original post reads:
coqui_chris wrote:http://inthesetimes.com/working/entry/1 ... ternships/
As many workers get ready to blow off the week’s steam with a few beers, striking Labatt Brewing Company workers are calling for a boycott of the Canadian brewer’s products....
The story only led the reader in with "as many of you are preparing to drink". You choose to ignore the links that the story provides about the "innocent?" striking workers:
Some details in the story include:
"Justice Donald Burrage ruled that workers cannot obstruct people coming and going from the Labatt building on Leslie Street. They must also take down tents they have set up and remove all other objects they've brought to the area where they've been picketing since March 25."
"Labatt cited dozens of incidents when illegally striking workers blocked people from gaining entrance to the property and leaving it.

It also referenced instances when nails and other objects were placed in front of the entranceway, and one case when a person jumped in front of a commercial vehicle. Police were called to the site on multiple occasions."
Oh yes, those poor, poor union workers..., but what was Labatt's doing to them? Something about unpaid internships. Okay, what does that solve?

On the Modern Drunkard Board. Where I said it occurred.
NYDingbat wrote: I also saw foremen catching installers IN THE BAR during working hours when they were supposed to be, y'know, installing phones, suspend them, only to see the union grieve the suspension and get the layabouts their suspension money back....
So I won't be boycotting any company that is standing up to unreasonable union demands.

1) Most factories, skyscrapers, warehouses, office parks I've been to have been built by Construction Workers. And by "most" I mean "every single one of them, ever"

2) A) If a CEO can run every single automated machine himself, fax every order, answer every email, take every phone call, collate every file, package all of the end-products, load them onto trucks and trains, then pilot them to their place of purchase, then you've got a damn good point. The workers are lucky their boss lets them come by and lend a hand
B) If he CAN'T do all of that ... He owes his employees a proportional cut in the profits and expenditure. Not as much as himself as the financier, mind you, but something of a Living Wage.

3) Maybe you're right about studying your boss and mastering his skill. I mean how hard is it to be re-born as a wealthy child sent to prep schools and country clubs and top private universities after you've already reached middle-aged adulthood? WHAT?

4) This happens every day
it is literally against the law for an employer to suggest to an employee that they have the right to vote out their union if their needs aren't being satisfied.
