Here is an article on the subject.
My response would be, "How drunk?"

Seeing your parents having fun every now and again is probably good. Holding back your mum's hair while she chunders, probably isn't good. One of my favourite memories from being under ten was the sight of my dad giggling, singing rude songs and ringing my grandpa when he couldn't remember the last verse.

That said, as much as I recognise that getting pissed on a park bench as a teenager with a bottle of crap cider is a rite of passage, I do not think that pubs are an appropriate place for children. This is not because they shouldn't see what happens in there but more that I resent having to moderate my language/behaviour in what I think is an adult environment. If you want to go to the pub, find a fucking babysitter - don't aggressively ask me to watch my language just because you can't forgo an evening out.

Much agreed.
Now, as far as kids seeing their folks endrunkened, well, there is no boilerplate, in my own eyes.
We each behave differently upon encountering drunkivity, and we all behave differently with each version of lovely Miss Ehtyl, and also, each time we drink.
(I think i've expended way too much of my neuron endorphin pleasure with further intelligent discussion today, so now to some other threads!)

Re: Is it harmful for kids to see their parents drunk?
I vividly remember my dad's 40th birthday. He had bought a plastic pond about the size of a bathtub and filled it with ice and beer before leaving it for my and my brother to play with. We were too young to even consider drinking it. Also, for his 50th he filled one of the water butts in the garden with beer and ice, but this time we were allowed to drink it, after we had served drinks to the guests. It was Baltika no.3 which I haven't seen since but I remember it tasting glorious

Re: Is it harmful for kids to see their parents drunk?
I always loved the smell of wine, peanuts and cigar bugs when my parents had a party back in the day. There was nothing better than consuming the leftovers while they were still asleep on a sunday morning (mostly we children feasted on the snacks though, rather than the beer, wine and shots).
Years later when I was in fith grade there was the usual summer-village-party and while my parents were nowhere to be found, the neighbour´s grandpa was deliciously drunk and attempted walking out of the taverns yard, stumbling over every not so meaningful piece of obstacle not placed in his direct way to the gate.
I had to make fun of him in front of all the girls, knowing it was 4 o clock in the morning and my parents were lost in a crowd of maybee 10 people. Nothing could go wrong?! Right?
Then my parents showed up...
My mother tried to grab a hold on my father, who was unmistakably amused by his sheer inability to hold onto anything resembling a strong hold while crashing left to right from fence to fence on a fourty foot yard. Carriyng that giggling bastard on her back, my mother pleaded to me to help carry him home down the street (300 meters downward...) which I voluntarily did. Much to the deserved laugher of the girls (I messed that up big time huh?)
Then we walked down the street, trying with all force we had to direct my still amused father in one line resembling an interrogation mark towards our house. Some other neighbours just arrived home, to which my mother laughingly shouted: He should have eaten the cheese...
I was embarassed. To top things off my drunken mother asked me to help undress my father until he lied on the bed giglging in his underwear and socks. I called game then and went to bed myself.
To answer your question, no.

I'm a giggling bastard, at times, but only when the tequila got in me.
Now where's the cheese?!

Re: Is it harmful for kids to see their parents drunk?
I apparently hoovered up the leftover beer at my own christening. No real point to that other than it's become a bit of family folklore. I don't see it as a problem unless the kid has to clean up in any way (physically or emotionally) because of your excesses. Yay modern drunkardism and everything, but having dealt with children who are the children of alcoholism, well, yeah, that's fucking heartbreaking. There is a difference, and as responsible drunkards, we know the difference.

Re: Is it harmful for kids to see their parents drunk?
very important difference. My parents even now make a point of getting up early and doing something the day after, no matter how drunk they were, though I think part of that is to pretend not to be hungover. If it was particularly heavy though, dad usually caves in and has a beer or four before noon. Don't know how he stays undrunk during the week, as he works from home and has no less than 150 bottles of wine and 10 litres or so of spirits there at any timeGinSoakedGirl wrote:There is a difference, and as responsible drunkards, we know the difference.

Perhaps it is the responsibility of us, we Modern Drunkards, to inform the youth of how one properly maintains such an unhealthy lifestyle.GinSoakedGirl wrote:...Yay modern drunkardism and everything, but having dealt with children who are the children of alcoholism, well, yeah, that's fucking heartbreaking. We drink, yes indeed, but we also take care of business.
That sets us apart from the cardboard boxers, Gawd hepp 'em.

Re: Is it harmful for kids to see their parents drunk?
I'm not reading the article, but my answer is: No. Fuck that.
How about people who have horrible undrunk parents? No substance makes them assholes, they just suck at life period. What's the crybaby remedy to that?
If you're a shitty drunk, you can always stop drinking. But what if you're just a plain shitty person?

Re: Is it harmful for kids to see their parents drunk?
i'll say it depends on the drinker.
i've seen humans who are dedicated, loving parents undrunk turn into slurring, hurtful assholes when they drink too much (and they've always insisted they haven't.) i think those who bottle up their anger and frustration with everyday life (money, career, marriage, money, kids, money) tend to be the worst drunk parents.
booze is a truth serum, and if you can't handle your emotional shit without it, you have no business using it as your therapist. and it is a particularly awful family counselor. kids who have to grow up with parents who get all crazy mean or scary sad while boozing will end up either needing professional help, as a part of some sick undrunk cult, or just as abusive as the douchetroughs who didn't know when to 86 themselves from the house.
i seent all sides of this. i'm named after my aunt, who died from her dad's gun while he was loaded on moonshine. my mom never touched booze after that because she's terrified of history repeating itself.
i know how much i can have before i'm no longer in the "responsible mom zone." i can feel it. if there's nobody around to take the reins, i give the bottle some time to itself.
