My favourite drinking destination is Osaka, Japan. There's so much to love. Alcohol vending machines. Amused tolerance of public drunkeness. Drinking on trains is not only allowed, on long distance trains it's socially acceptable....
Yes Nashville over Memphis for me. Not sure why. I think it's because the drinking establishments in Nashville are more genuine and authentic to my taste. While in Nashville, I didn't find the Disneylandification that can be found in Memphis and, say, New Orleans. Memphis (and N.O. and others) know that people are there to drink and that visitors will simply accept just about anything as a "bar". You end up with a lot of places that are similar to the bars found in Las Vegas casinos; you can get a drink, but the experience isn't a true example of a genuine drinking culture. Now, this is not to say that those cities don't have plenty of other places that are true to the culture of the locals (which I specifically try to seek out), and it's not to say that I haven't had a good time in each of these cities. Memphis and New Orleans and Atlanta and Boston and Portland and Austin are all very fun places to drink... just not in my top ten.

A trip to Japan has been on my short list of things to do for a number of years. I can not wait to experience it!!

Lines and all things linear are, as Einstein told us, artificial constucts.

Have no truck with them.

I've always wanted to go to Disneyland. Still do. I know I'll be disappointed, but ever since I was a little kid I've wanted to visit the Haunted Mansion & see real live ghosts.

I hear what you're saying about inauthentic bars, but in some ways that fake glamour is the appeal of Americana to me. Maybe it's because I've never been there & have a romanticised view of such things. I can't stand McDonalds. Is Vegas like that?

Memphis is on my list of places to go because it's on the train & seems like an ideal place to hire a car & cruise around the Deep South for a couple of days. I'd never heard of Beale Street a couple of year ago, but I'd never heard of Memphis barbecue either. Now I want to experience both. Graceland is on the list, of course. I'm not an Elvis fan, but again the Americana thing appeals. Maybe I could hire a car for long enough to do a loop that includes Nashville? But then I'd wanna take in Gatlinburg too, & then just keep driving.

Sorry, getting off topic. Crossing the line. Maybe your former friend was offended by your preference for playing dice over talking families & said that as a deliberate put-down? I agree that you've gotta cross lines to know what they're all about. I got heckled in another thread for mentioning rules, so I'm not going to go there, but maybe standards, or boundaries are better words. Everyone has their own. For you not being homeless is a standard you set yourself, but also being free to live your own life your way. For your college friend not having three beers in a row in a dive bar, or being treated as less intereresting than a dice game is his standard. I dunno.

You owe it to yourself to visit Disneyland. It's great. If you are able, take a child with you. Watching them is the best part.

Then, on a separate visit, go by yourself or with other adults. Adjacent to the Disneyland Hotel, there is a outdoor shopping dining area (can't remember the name) that has several bars. Hit a few of them before going inside the park. You'll see everything differently with a healthy buzz.

Graceland is a kick. It's much smaller than it looks in pictures. The house is probably less than 3,000 square feet.

The biggest problem I had with my old college friends was that they didn't hide the fact that they thought they were better than me and the other regulars at Mick's. AND, they treated me like I was some sort of dancing bear in a circus - there to amuse them.

"Slumming it" at Mick's is a novelty to them. Kinda like going to a freak show. But to me, Mick's is a great place with great people.

The college buddies were being rude and they knew it. But since they felt some sort of superiority, they thought they could treat people however they want.

Graceland. What's the hold for so many?

Others have sang about it as well...

It was said that he invented rock and roll, but he simply was the bridge to bring it to others, not the one who created this marvelous sound, ain't that right? As if rock needed validity to exist. Music had another path in mind, when calypso was fine, but them blues was going on underneath it all.

Others can speak better about such a subject.

Then again, that fellow sure was charismatic in his time, and there is nothing like a King in his time.

No doubt.

Maybe it takes a bridge to connect folks...

It's the hold he has for so many that is the attraction for me. Music history wise I'd sooner visit Clarksdale, but Graceland seems like a good place to buy a cheesy souvenir.

YES he made it palatable and acceptable to white people. I've never been a fan. But I get it.
