Get some video of that if it's not too much bother. I love the old punch card stuff. Fascinating.

Re: making booze
I know, I know. The computer I worked on in the Air Force was designed in '54 and commissioned for use in '68. So the computer had been around as long as I had been alive. Seems those old solid state mainframes traveled cross country and off road in the field better than the "modern computers". We had 12" magnetic reel to reels to load the program. It was loaded onto 8 reels. If that went tits up we had to load the program on mylar punch tapes. 113 of the little bastards. So the old stuff is what I find interesting.Mr. Viking wrote:I'll see if the betamax recorder still works when I'm home again

Re: making booze
got some cider going (from shop bought juice of course) should be ready for outdoor drinking season.
Also made a new blade for my shredder to find that the electrics need unfuckulating having been left in my "shed" which had no roof for a year. But still, potential for booze made from real life apples in the future

Good work, fellow Drunkard.
You live in a country with apple orchards, right?
Definitely need to get or build yourself one of these...

Did you construct that yourself? Well... wouldn't surprise me, knowing you. Do you know how to ferment, then brew and then distill elixir form apples? That would be quite cool.

I'm going to build one, need to get my shredder sorted first. I have my oak beams out rotting in the garden and bottle jacks rusting at the tops where the hydraulic fluid hasn't leakedBadfellow wrote:Good work, fellow Drunkard.

Re: making booze
Bottle jacks work great for that sort of thing. Obviously, make sure you apply pressure evenly if you're using more than one. Also, using a home brewer's grain bag to contain the mashed apples during pressing really helps keep the mess under control. As far as your shredder, you might consider using a hand operated or electric meat grinder as your mangler. Keep us posted.Mr. Viking wrote: I'm going to build one, need to get my shredder sorted first. No, it's Italian made. I think I remember paying $150 for it used. It works by screw and ratchet principle, and is capable of generating a fuck-ton of force to extract every last drop of the juicy goods. There's a mangler that goes with it (not pictured) which basically turns the apples into mush before pressing.mistah willies wrote: Did you construct that yourself?
I know some things, my friend. A person can turn out a keen apple brandy from a column still, but better yet is the Normandy method of making calvados which typically utilizes a traditional "alembic" or pot still so as not to strip out too much of the flavor. It is also interesting to note that apple brandy takes well to aging in charred oak barrels, much in the same manner as a whiskey or dark rum.mistah willies wrote:Do you know how to ferment, then brew and then distill elixir form apples?
There's a few of us here who have the skills to run the stills.
Why in the bloody hell haven't we started a company yet?

Re: making booze
I have a 2.5bhp tree shredder, "Viking" brand with a custom blade (made by my own fine hands because they don't sell parts any more) but which I need to sort out the wiring on. If I can't Im going to turn an oak cylinder and put screws in it and do it that way.

Solid principle. Connected to a shaft and a wheel, you can manually tackle +100 apples per minute with burly ease. Good workout for the arms and upper body too. I've also seen manglers powered by cordless screwdrivers and small electric engines with a high torque delivery ratio. Remember: make it easy to clean. You'reMr. Viking wrote: If I can't Im going to turn an oak cylinder and put screws in it and do it that way.
A 2.5 hp small gas engine would be interesting. Modify the shredder so that the hopper is huge and top-feeding. Mount the whole thing on a skid with the press so that you could put it in the back of a pick-up or on a trailer and haul it around directly to the orchards, then return to base with gallon upon gallon of fresh pressed cider for fermentation. Sorry, I like to dream.
On a tangent: strawberry season is getting under way here in the northern hemisphere. I know they make a fine "champagne". A strawberry brandy would seem to be the next logical step. Then, of course, you have to wonder what rhubarb would be like added to the equation. Hmmmmmm.

Re: making booze
well i got the viking shredder running, I was missing a bolt and those crafty Austrians had a safety cuttoff linked to the nut. Not crafty enough for me though.
I'm a little concerned about the ammount of rust so I may attempt to refabricate part of it from stainless steel and rubber. Before any of you get excited I need to use the rubber to keep juice from leaking out of the box and down the shaft (I said stop giggling) into the motor

Re: making booze
oh and my local homebrew shop (can I put a link to it or is that advertising?) sells those red presses. Starting from £116 for a 5l (1.2US G) model I think they are a bit steep when I can get 5 tone bottle jacks for £10 or so and have plenty of timber offcuts
