Rye and cognac, nice, Never heard of that combo. Don`t they burn a hole into the vermouth?

No. They compliment the sweet vermouth well. It's a tangy, peppery little number. I really like it.

I discovered the Vieux Carre in October. Although labor intensive to build, it is a true classic. Suprisingly delicious. The first one I had was at the Carousel Bar in the lounge of the Hotel Monteleone. The bartender claimed that it was invented in that very establishment. By most accounts, the people from NOLA are proudly full of shit, but I believe him.

Both Booze Traveler and Wondrich's Best Bars in America show have given the Carousel Bar the credit for the Vieux Carre. So now I have to get down there one day to have one from the tit.

When I was in New Orleans this was one of the drinks I had on my short list.

Wasn't able to get a seat at the Carousel Bar, sadly. The drink, however, was deliscious and I enjoyed several.

When I was there in October, I decided that I was not going leave until I got to sit at the bar. And I wasn't going to have a Vieux Carre without the full treatment. So I stood around drinking rum and cokes until a seat opened. It was worth the wait just so I could check it off my list.
DRINK!
