WTF Whiskey

Post by Patchez »

State of whiskey today is a fucking shit show. Over priced swill getting chased by “collectors”, secondary markets getting out of control with prices, fucking candy stores following the secondary market then trying to price their “special” bottles like that and finally the distilleries doing special runs, blends and movie or tv show related releases that while priced reasonably some shit bags are already hyping it to the point that prices in stores are starting to creep.

Utter horse shit.

Don’t think just because you drink bottom shelf it won’t hit your shit as well. All it takes is a few assholes to start the hype train and your shit will be over 420 bucks a bottle as well. I remember when Blanton’s was always on the shelf. Everywhere. For $45 to $55 a bottle. Now it’s an allocated bottle and over a Benjamin. It wasn’t that good. Elmer T. Lee went the same way.

Wellers is the newest one to be getting raped. Getting impossible to find and 2 times the price. No fucking way I’m paying over 30 bucks for ANY Wellers.

Fuck Collectors. You don’t “collect” whiskey. You fucking drink it.

I saw a show recently and the owner of the bar said it better than I ever could. He was asked about his “collection’ at the bar. He said and I’m paraphrasing here because I don’t remember the exact quote, I don’t collect. Collectors buy a bottle and never open it, never sample it, never share it. I buy a bottle and I open it, I try it, and while I don’t share it share it, I share it : then makes the fingers rubbing gesture to indicate cash.

Anyways rant over. I closing or the TL:DR version, I’m never calling my liquor cabinet a collection. From this day forward I have a selection that I will gladly share with everyone who stops by and asks for a glass or three.

Excellent rant and 100% correct. About 10 years ago I could order a 20 yr old bottle of Pappy Van Winkle Family Reserve for $90. Now, my local liquor store tells me that they only get 1 bottle per year and I have to be on a waiting list for who knows how long to get it. OR, I can buy a bottle online for about $3,000. WTF? I think the Chinese and Japanese are to blame for this. They were doing just fine on rice beer and sake but then they got some money in their pockets and WHAM. Single malt scotches were the first to suffer this phenomena. I could buy 18 yr Macallan for $90/bottle at one point. Then it went to $135. Now, it's closing in on $300. The regular $12 yr old held steady at $45 for years but now it's around $60.

I still splurge once in a while but stick to mid grade most of the time. If I do splurge, I won't pay a premium for anything that's only 80 proof. That's bullshit too and an excuse to rip off the consumer. Good premium whiskey should be 86 proof at a MINIMUM!

Maybe I'm just lucky, or don't drink the right hooch, but I don't see that in this part of the world. No issues getting Jameson, Bulleit, Makers, Knob Creek, etc..

Collectible whiskeys... the Entombed.

Patchez does indeed touch on a sad state of affairs. If limited releases are your thing, it seems you have to board the train early, which means your connectivity to what's happening in the scene has to be impeccable. Get in early, stock up.

A friend of mine and I scored a Lagavulin 21, a limited release, and one of the best things that has ever touched my lips, for $300. Now it goes for around $4k.

An enterprising individual could profit from such a state of affairs, but this is a dark art. Leaving such bottles in the hands of Modern Drunkards to preserve is likely a bad idea anyhow, because we actually drink our whiskey.

If only there was a way to become the heir of whiskey collections...
Don't worry. We're in no hurry.

This is the vilest form of dark arts. It makes necromancy seem like a quaint kindergarten game. All who practice it should be put to the torch.

A dark art, perhaps. But liquor is a commodity like anything else, subject to the laws of supply and demand. It wouldn't necessarily be such a bad thing to have a whiskey futures market or an aged tequila exchange. If you could make money off your insight into alcohol, would you do it?

The real shitter goes back to what Patchez was saying about supposed "collectors" having large, expensive collections for the sake of prestige rather than enjoyment. I also hold contempt for so called "influencers" who profit dirtily from pushing certain products through general and social media.

If they want to drink up the Weller, I'll drink Buffalo Trace, and when that becomes wallet rape I'll move further afield into little known aged rums and fine Moldovan brandy. Motherfuckers'll never catch me.

Under Zimatic Influence

Post by Badfellow »

Hello, I'm an "influencer". My life is super sexy and I have over 2.5 followers on the MDM forums. You should drink Zima. When I'm partying on my 16 foot aluminum yacht with the glamorous bait hags from the marina, I always have a full stock of ice cold Zima malt beverage on hand for when things get HOT! Livin' la Zima loca, baby!

I don't think that one's ever coming back BF. The Zima ship has sailed, hit an ice burg and sank.

I swear I saw that stuff in the store not that long ago. Another winner I took note of in recent history was the low calorie Pabst pounders.

Apparently, Miller did resurrect Zima for a brief period of time.

Was Big Casino the captain of that ship?
