Not drunk oriented, but one of my favorites...

just got doen watchingthe best scene - Jaws - where Quin tells the story of the Indinapolis.... great men, Hey, we delivered the bomb. Ah, what a great drunken scene. If you haven't watched it lately - do for that scene alone. Movie maker. Blah, ttoo drunk.
Fuck 'em if they can't take a joke.

It will hurt less if you don't struggle.

Interestingly enough, when Spielberg was looking for a dramatic counterpoint for the film, i.e. a way to make Quint a more sympathetic character, he telephoned (long time Oliver Stone collaborator) John Milius for advice. Milius more or less dictated the USS Indianapolis (CA-35) scene down the telephone line. Which probably explains why all the characters are drunk in that scene.

Rumour has it it that the actors, no doubt prompted by Robert Shaw (a fearsome boozer) went for a more alcoholic than usual method aproach to the scene, getting absolutely hammered. The cut takes are the stuff of fan-boy legend. And if anyone has copies of them would they please PM me...

Great drinking oriented movies

Post by stiflersmom »

We've just started a weekly club of drinking movies.
Started off with "Withnail & I" (Richard E Grant's finest hour, wine, sherry, lighter fluid) and then segued into "The Party" (Peter Sellers, 1968, Martinis, chicken, hairpieces).
Strangebrew, Barfly, Cocktail (Yes) all on schedule for forthcoming weeks.
V. cheap way of getting drunk - invite all your friends round under the thinly veiled pretense of having a civilised movie-watching session. It will, inevitably, degenerate into overflowing ashtrays, uneaten plates of chips and dips left to go soggy and flyblown, and various people disappearing for the rainbow yawn.
Nirvana.

I just got a great collection of drinking movies on DVD: Withnail, The Party, The Lost Weekend, My Favorite Year.

I have to go get Barfly though.

Great suggestions, but there's a few y'all are leaving out:
1- Has anybody even mentioned a Bogart flick? How about Casablanca, fer chrissakes, half the movie is set in a bar! Besides, "Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks in to mine!" Classic.
2- SlapShot. I know, its more of a hockey movie, but there's plenty of drinking too. You've got Paul Newman in his finest cinematic moment, the Hanson Bros., Mo the lech, Braden's drunk wife, Oglethorpe, the reasons for this movie's greatness go on and on.
3- The Blues Brothers. Blues and Booze go together, end of story.
4- Swingers. Get some friends together, make a couple pitchers of G&Ts, put on Swingers, and let the good times roll.

Oh, I had effectivly blocked out Hopper in that movie till you mention it. I'll put Red Rock West on my list. I haven't seen it yet.
