I"ll check my CD out tonight. I got it in highschool, which was almost 10 years ago now. I haven't seen the movie for ever.

Very funny song

Post by UnkleLemmy »

I find this song hilarious. Its actually supposed to be a serious, anti-drinking song about AA but its so corny it just cracks me up. Plus its a real pathetic "country" song (I put country in quotes 'cause all real country singers are drunks). Here are the lyrics (you really have to see the video to get the full effect though):

That's Why I'm Here by Kenny Chesney

Well I ain't had nothin' to drink
I knew that's probably what you'd think
If I'd drop by this time of night
Remember way back when
I promised you I'd drop in
At one of those meetings down at the 'Y'

They started talkin' about steps you take
Mistakes you make the hearts you break
And the price you pay
I almost walked away

You could hear a pin drop
When this old man
Stood up and said I'm gonna say it again
Like I do every week
For those who don't know me

It's the simple things in life
Like the kids at home and a lovin' wife
That you miss the most, when you lose control
And everything you love starts to disappear
The devil takes your hand and says no fear
Have another shot, just one more beer
Yeah I've been there
That's why I'm here

This old boy stood up in the isle
Said he'd been livin' a life of denial
Then he cried, as he talked about wasted years
I couldn't believe what I heard
It was my life word for word
And all of the sudden, it was clear

It's the simple things in life
Like the kids at home and a lovin' wife
That you miss the most, when you lose control
And everything you love starts to disappear
The devil takes your hand and says no fear
Have another shot, just one more beer
Yeah I've been there
That's why I'm here

I know for us it may be too late
But it would mean the world to me
If you were there when I stand to say

It's the simple things in life
Like the kids at home and a lovin' wife
That you miss the most, when you lose control
And everything you love starts to disappear
The devil takes your hand and says no fear
Have another shot, just one more beer
Yeah I've been there
That's why I'm here

OOH, I've been there
That's why I'm here

It's a sign of the times, Lemmy, when country artists feel the need to demonize the sacred juice which made some of their finest moments.

Mind you, a good drunkard never allows it to destroy those around him. Any and all destruction should be confined to our livers and assorted detoxification organs. It's one thing to get bombed, a beautiful flower that is. It's another to go and smack your woman and/or kids around as a result.

The point: be a silly drunk. Wear that lamp shade. Pick a fight with that oak tree. Pretend you actually know how to dance.

Maybe Kenny Chesney has some skeletons in his closet he needed to put in the dumpster.

I have several country songs about drinkin'. Those always make it fun to drink more. I should make up a list.

If anybody likes good drinking country music check out Hank Williams III. He follows in his grandfathers footsteps, not his wannabe rock and roll fathers. Got great titles like "Whiskey, Weed and Women" and "5 Shots of Whiskey". Almost all of his songs are about getting drunk. One of the few country artists today actually making real country music not this new awfull country pop crap.

Tim Spencer.

I heard somewhere that Peter Sellers sang it on the muppets show.

And if you're in a solo binge frame of mind, "Ghosts" by Japan sure helps you push it back. As I am currently discovering. Fuck it, when am I going to get an even break? Whoops, the self-pity's sneaking up, I better increase the dosage...

And, of course, Steve Earle. The before rehab stuff for preference.

PS His writing's not bad either. I sincerely recommend "Dog House Roses." A collection of Mr Earle's short stories. Not at all bad.

The Smiths seem to go nice with a morning whisky:

All men have secrets and here is mine so let it be known
we have been through hell and high tide
that means I can rely on you
and yet you start to recoil
heavy words are so lightly thrown
but I'd still leap in front of a flying bullet for you

So what difference does it make?
so what difference does it make?
it makes none, but now you have gone
and you must be looking very old tonight

The devil will find work for idle hands to do
I stole and I lied, and why? because you asked me to
but now you make me feel so ashamed
because I've only got two hands
well, I'm still fond of you

So what difference does it make?
so what difference does it make?
it makes none, but now you have gone
and your prejudice won't keep you warm tonight

Oh the devil will find work for idle hands to do
I stole and then I lied just because you asked me to
but now you know the truth about me
you won't see me anymore
well, I'm still fond of you

But no more apologies
no more apologies
I'm too tired, I'm so very tired
and I'm feeling very sick and ill today
but I'm still fond of you

Shite, booze and recollections of ex-girlfriends do not make for happy listening...

...And yet...

Post by Palinka (RIP) »

These Things Take Time

My eyes have seen the glory of the sacred wonderkind
you took me behind a disused railway line
and said "I know a place where we can go
where we are not known"
and you gave me something that I won't forget too soon

But I can't believe that you'd ever care
and this is why you will never care
these things take time
I know that I'm
the most inept that ever slept

I'm spellbound, but a woman divides
and the hills are alive with celibate cries
but you know where you came from
you know where you're going
and you know where you belong
you said I was ill, and you were not wrong

But I can't believe that you'd ever care
and this is why you will never care
these things take time
I know that I'm
the most inept that ever slept

Oh the alcoholic afternoons
when we sat in your room
they meant more to me than any
than any living thing on earth
they had more worth
than any living thing on earth

Vivid and in your prime
you will leave me behind
you will leave me behind

A fine drinking song. Especially 6AM.
FuckShit, I should get some sleep.
