This recipe is inspired by Benjamin Franklin, an avid lover of rum and a modern drunk in his own time. Franklin was fond of doctoring various recipes to taste including his famous Orange Shrub. Here is a more contemporary variation of that recipe influenced, much as was the case with Franklin, by the availability of those ingredients best at hand.
Ben & "Jerry's" Orange Shrub (Field Expedient Libation)
4 oz. Sailor Jerry Rum
1 oz. Orange Juice (NOT from concentrate)
1/4 tsp. sugar
Add a modest amount of ice to a cocktail glass. Sprinkle sparingly the sugar over ice cubes. Pour rum and orange juice. Stir to mix. Suck down rapidly through a wide guage straw.
An O.J. with lots of pulp will lend some authenticity. Fresh squeezed, of course, would be the best. You can also bump things up with a more flavorful, less processed sugar like brown or turbanado (or even molassas if you're into that sort of shit).

I'm looking forward to trying this one... I'm not into that molasses shit, but I think turbinado or such would taste really good.

Just drank one of these, but added a couple dashes of angostura, damn tasty and quite strong.
