What songs do you want played at your funeral?

Post by drivinwest »

I've asked to be cremated, and in lieu of a burial, a bench be purchased on Town Lake in Austin for runners to stop and rest.

But as for songs to be played at my celebration:

Grateful Dead- Ripple
The Beatles- All You Need is Love
Cat Stevens- Morning Has Broken
Louis Armstrong-What a Wonderful World
Pink Floyd-Wish You Were Here

If you've pondered it, please post your requests.

"Please Don't Bury Me"

By John Prine

"Woke up this morning
Put on my slippers
Walked in the kitchen and died
And oh what a feeling!
When my soul
Went thru the ceiling
And on up into heaven I did ride
When I got there they did say
John, it happened this way
You slipped upon the floor
And hit your head
And all the angels say
Just before you passed away
These were the very last words
That you said:

Chorus:
Please don't bury me
Down in that cold cold ground
No, I'd druther have "em" cut me up
And pass me all around
Throw my brain in a hurricane
And the blind can have my eyes
And the deaf can take both of my ears
If they don't mind the size
Give my stomach to Milwaukee
If they run out of beer
Put my socks in a cedar box
Just get "em" out of here
Venus de Milo can have my arms
Look out! I've got your nose
Sell my heart to the junkman
And give my love to Rose

Repeat Chorus

Give my feet to the footloose
Careless, fancy free
Give my knees to the needy
Don't pull that stuff on me
Hand me down my walking cane
It's a sin to tell a lie
Send my mouth way down south
And kiss my ass goodbye

Repeat Chorus"

This one, for sure: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hBlFh7P4MvU#

And perhaps this one, as well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNQRfBAzSzo#

And of course there will be waiters with bourbon and snackies, circulating in the chapel during services. God forbid anyone should get peckish. We'll have no dramatic graveside faints at my damn funeral. This is MY show. Wild sobbing and rending of garments, however, is very much encouraged.

My uncle asked me on his deathbed to play a song at his funeral.

Let It Be by the beatles, of course.

So that's one that stands out.
Bundy wrote:"I say Rooster old bean! sally forth with another pair of pink gins for these jolly lovely gels and we'll see if they arent up for a spot of rumpy pumpy before we have to dash off and give Jerry another sound thrashing, what? Tally ho!"

One fine Day-Offspring
Pennywise-Final Day
One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer-George Thorogood
The likes of You-Flogging Molly
Use of Time-311
Thrill is Gone-BB King. Since my name is "Phil" I would like the lyrics changed appropriately.

I'll leave the rest up to the guests. If they haven't put down enough booze to make bad decisions by them, They have no business at my funeral.

The Parting Glass.

Here's the actual language from page one of my will....

I hereby direct that my remains be cremated and that my ashes be sprinkled in the Holy Water of the Au Sable River at the boathouse in front of Whippoorwill Lodge. This ceremony and depositing of ashes should involve equal parts Jamesons Irish whiskey and cigars and should include anyone who gives a shit. I don’t care where you put my headstone. The personal representative can figure that one out. I don’t want a big deal made of this. Just box me up, burn me and blow me over the Au Sable.
fuck em man, it ain't easy walkin the righteous path.

I used to think I'd be dead long before this and I had a whole list of songs I wanted played at my funeral.
Now I just want this:

...and in lieu of a eulogy:
