Rye Whiskey

Post by fizzmaster »

I've recently discovered Rye, and I think its the smoothest, most delicious thing for the price. $13.99 for a bottle of Beam Rye? Sign me up. If there is another Rye thread, direct me there. I did a search and couldn't find it. All Rye heads, welcome, and lets talk about stuff that tastes like it came from God's own nipple.

You gotta try Wiser's Very Old (18yo) Blended Canadian Whisky (40%abv). Crown Royal markets a few upscale ryes, but the Wiser's 18 is the best (they make several whiskies; be sure you specify the "Very Old"). I couldn't find it in Chatham MA when I was on the Cape last November (2008). You should be able to get it in Boston, though. I bought a bottle in Austin TX (Nov. 2007) -- $18.95 for a 750.

I've only had these, none of the more fancy ones listed. They're aces.

The Sazerac is really really good. Hard to find, but right up there with the best. I wish I could find it more often.

I'm partial to Old Overholt for the taste and WT101 Rye for the punch. Rye makes a superior Manhattan.

Jim Beam Rye + Angostura, neat, is amazing.

It's the only Rye I've tried, and around here the only other Rye they have is Templeton and Wild Turkey... I just may get the W.T. when I get paid.

Agree with Peetie here, Wiser's 18 Yr Old is good. I joined the Wiserhood in August when I arrived in Canada and since then other ryes I've tried are Alberta Premium (if it's good enough for Lahey, it's good enough for me), Alberta Springs, Wiser's De Luxe, Wisers Special Blend and of course Canadian Club.

Rye does indeed rule.

Alberta Premium brand ryes are the only 100% Rye whiskeys from Canada, but I like the blends too. Wisers and R and R are good for the price as is Canadian Club.

Canadian Whisky of the Year 2006-2008 (3 years in a row) according to the little cardboard dog-tag my bottle is wearing.

Canada has, as of more recently, been knocking out some very respectable rye whiskey. True that.

Unfortunately, there is no law in Canada dictating rye content in a whiskey labeled as rye (in the US it must be no less than 51%). Hence, the Canadian rye scene is still rather hit and miss, left as you are to the whims of the given distiller and how they chose to formulate their mash, blend and age their booze, etc.

I have yet to explore some of the fine Canadian prairie ryes that are starting to emerge.

I've never been a big fan of rye whiskey. It's ok, but i just don't seem to have a taste for it like i do corn whiskeys. Hmm, perhaps it's time i try another bottle and discover those new flavors again. In fact, i'd say this is a must. Next bottle i get, gonna have to be rye.
Beer's just being social. Whiskey's drinkin'.
