You have to realize this goes way beyond Brown Foreman.
Don't think so? Just try to find any blended scotch, expensive or cheap, that is less than $20/bottle and more than 80 proof these days. Can't be done.
Only expensive single malts are still stronger than 80 proof. Bourbon is still holding it's own, for now. Gin too.
Vodka? forgettaboutit. It's boutique and extra expensive now if you want high proof.
Rum? Oh you have the Sailor, and others, but they aren't cheap.
Get used to it. The new tax laws from the Obamatron and his money printing machine will mandate 70 proof as the next bench mark!

Re: Brown-Forman Product List
I'm not sure whether this bothers anybody, but a friend of mine just posted an article abut boycotts of companies in the wake of the Proposition 8 in California, etc etc etc.
Anyways, one of the companies on the list is sure enough Brown-Forman, who reportedly won't grant any domestic partner benefits to gays or lesbians.
Just putting this out there.

The fact they make both JD and southern comfort is off putting.

Re: Brown-Forman Product List
Just out of interest, has anyone contacted Brown-Foreman on this issue? Just wondering what their stand point is on both the decision to change the percentage and the fact that people are boycotting their products in response.
Also does anyone know if any pubs/clubs are also standing with us?
For me it has made a difference. Finlandia was my mixing vodka of choice for a very long time but alas no more and Asolute is filling a gap until I find better for a reasonable price.

Re: Brown-Forman Product List
Without doing an exhaustive search of all the posts related to this....I can remember that their answer to the issue of reduced proof was something along these lines: " Our market research has found our consumers prefer a lower proof product." Or some such crap. I'm sure someone on this board remembers it better than me. But there you are.Hardcore Stig wrote:Just out of interest, has anyone contacted Brown-Foreman on this issue? "We don't think it's appropriate to have a magazine called Modern Drunkard dictate how we make our whiskey," Mr Lynch said. from the Times Online http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/w ... 488723.ece They call TJD bourbon though, which kinda calls into question the amount of research that was put into the article.Hardcore Stig wrote:Just out of interest, has anyone contacted Brown-Foreman on this issue?

Re: Brown-Forman Product List
I'm saddened by this thread because Jack has lowered their standards, but mostly because it's become trendy to not like Jack. Jack is a great tasting American liquor. One of the oldest established in this great country of ours. But because it's not a bourbon, people are treating it like it's piss. Well I, for one, LOVE JD! AND Southern comfort (especially the 100 proof version)!
I know taste is a matter of personal opinion, but anyone that thinks that Jack and Southern don't taste great while getting you drunk...well, there is something wrong with you! There I said it.

Getting drunk was good. I decided that I would always like getting drunk. It took away the obvious and maybe if you could get away from the obvious often enough, you wouldn't become obvious yourself - Bukowski

Re: Brown-Forman Product List
OK, you said it... and you're completely incorrect. TJD simply doesn't have the depth of flavors that a decent Bourbon has. The charcoal filtering removes too much from the finished product. If you don't believe me, sample a glass of TJD and Bourbon side-by-side. If you wanted to go with a similar-priced Bourbon, I'd suggest Maker's, but that would be an unfair fight. Evan, Ezra, and Old Crow will all blow Jack out of the water.drunkensooner wrote:I know taste is a matter of personal opinion, but anyone that thinks that Jack and Southern don't taste great while getting you drunk...well, there is something wrong with you! Don't take my word for it, though. Try it on your own. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by the results... and you'll never order TJD again.
As for Comfort... don't drink candy.

That's just this site, really. It's still nestled in the bosom of Americana. Hell, there's a bar in town with a giant TJD mural on the wall.drunkensooner wrote: it's become trendy to not like Jack.

Re: Brown-Forman Product List
I agree with FNZ. The dislike of jack around this board is common, but it's a huge product with a huge marketing budget behind it. I see it all the time, someone at the bar orders jack and i try to educate them, but in the end, they will still order it. I gotta make money too, so i still carry it while not drinking it myself because of the boycott but more importantly because there are alot better whiskeys out there, not just bourbons that are far superior for a better price. Jack is like Harley Davidson. It's Americana and people like it. Same reason for Harley, you can buy a better, cheaper, more dependable bike, but it doesn't have that Harley nameplate and people buy jack for the same reasons.
Beer's just being social. Whiskey's drinkin'.
