I simply found that I like the cheap whiskey better than the expensive whiskey. This is undoubtedly because my pallet has become accustomed to bottom shelf whiskey. But still, when it comes time to celebrate, I will go plunk the cash down for some Knob Creek.

I'll spend money on beer, but not whiskey or vodka because I go through it too fast.

There's nothing wrong with a cheap vodka or a bottom shelf whiskey.

Beer on the other hand. I don't know. There's just something about a good porter or brown ale and those don't always come cheap.

^ I'm the exact opposite. I prefer the taste of cheap lager and will usually go for whatever brand has the biggest discount on their six-packs or 24-bottle cases but will occasionally shell out some extra money for a good brand of bourbon. Although, to avoid draining an expensive bottle too fast, I start the drinking part of the day with it, having a couple of glasses, before shifting to beer and cheap hooch.

most bourbon/whiskey snobs don't do very well in blind tastings which speaks to the influence of label and prestige over actual quality itself.
would love to do a blind bourbon tasting
I've said it before most snobs couldn't pick Evan Williams out of a line up of bourbons 10 to 40 bucks over it's price range. It just punches way over it's weight class. Elijah Craig is the same.
sorry to randomly bump a post from 4 months ago...but

I'll be honest you can really embarrass yourself in blind tastings...i think all of us get caught up in marketing to some degree, that and brand loyalty, association and just what we're used to buying... I've blind taste tested beers a lot and I won't lie....I've had results miles off what I expected.

I once picked plain old Carlsberg export lager above Pilsner Urquel, Budvar and a couple of craft lagers....it was by far and away the cheapest. Previous to the blind test I'd have placed it bottom of the list.
