Re: Death's Door
OK, I was gonna start a thread on White Dog,but judging from the responses here I guess there would be little interest in it. I have two sitting waiting to try, asingle malt barley unaged and a rye, the one I posted in the Bulliet thread. They both log in at 62%. While the stuff may be considered for only frat boys and hipsters, proofing out at a buck twenty four seems pretty legit to this boozer. I try not to let anything get in the way of my trying and enjoying new ways to get pickled.
I learned that lesson a few years ago when I started drinking craft and European beers. I let the hipster and frat boy crowd keep me from enjoying really well made and tastey beer. Mainly because I couldn't stand being in those joints with that particular brand of asshole. I enjoy my own particular brand of assholism. Since they've all switched to the cheap brands, Miller and PBR, the price of that has gone up. In accordance to the laws of supply and demand, the price for the higher end beers has dropped to a reasonable level, to the point where dollar for dollar the higher ABV of the craft beer will get you there for pretty much the same price.
Thirsty get some and let us know what you think. I think now that work is over for the week I may have to crack mine for a taste. I will report back.

Re: Death's Door
62%abv...NOW we're talking. That's more in line with what I'd expect from a "raw" whiskey. Death's Door claims their whiskey distills out as high as 160 proof (80%abv) but offer no explanation as to how/why it ends up being bottled at 80 proof (40%abv). Couple that with the faux macho name, the $34 price and we're looking at a major ripoff, IMHO.Patchez wrote:OK, I was gonna start a thread on White Dog,but judging from the responses here I guess there would be little interest in it. Let us know about these two new whiskeys after you've sampled them, bro.

Re: Death's Door
Sure thing peetie. I also believe after a little more intrawebs research, that you are correct about the whole rip- off factor. Seems alot of start ups cashing in on the poularity of the History channels Moonshiners and the blatant exploitation of Popcorn Sutton, God rest his weary shiner's soul.
I think I will start a White dog thread so as to better keep the drinking public informed as to which are at least close enough to the "real deal", therefore at least worth the $ spent. I for one have sampled the "real deal" from three different sources. Two of these were from Appalachian sources in West-by-God-Virginia and the other was from a pair of buddies that I paintball with, they have a small kitchen stove reflux still that they play with to pretty interesting if not always great results.
The two WV samples were one of each type, rotgut near poison and the other, alas no longer attainable for myself, was three quarts of true Appalachia Mother's Milk.

Re: Death's Door
I've tried shine from quite a few sources and in different countries; the quality definitely ran the gamut but I've had some offerings, in Nova Scotia and also in WVA, that were surprisingly smooth.Patchez wrote:Sure thing peetie. A White Dog thread is an EXCELLENT idea for the very reasons you stated; if we're gonna enjoy (and pay for) white whiskey, let's share the info.

Indeed. There was even a time when Coors served in Georgia was, technically, moonshine.beerkegbilly wrote:Hey the only moonshine is the illegal kind.Got shine?

For a liquor to have that kind of name, the acclaim should lie in proof or % abv, just tasting rough is not enough.

Re: Death's Door
I've never had white whiskey before, I find the whole idea very strange and gimmicky. And the prices for them in liquor stores are ridiculous. What's the difference in taste?
Re: Death's Door
Mr. Lahey please refer to the White Dog thread for your answer.

True some are over priced gimmicks aimed at hipsters and frat boy douches, but we here at the White Dog research center are wading through the offerings in this style of likker to bring you what is worth trying and what is just shit.

Re: Death's Door
If Dr.Thirsty doesn't buy the Death's Door, I'll buy it and paste a God's honest review here, and on my Whiskey FB page. It's only 33 bucks, we've all spent more on less.

Re: Death's Door
I gave it a shot cuz it's from Wisco, but didn't really care for the taste. Kind of goes against all the things you look for in a whiskey like flavor. Think is still a bottle or 2 sitting on the shelf at the store.
