Generally when I'm gettin' my drink on, I start with something good for the first bit, then once I can't taste worth a damn (or care about taste), I switch to cheap stuff that'll still get the job done. This is usually after about 6 drinks. As much as I'd love to drink great stuff all of the time, I don't see the point in drinking it if you dno't notice that its good. Plus it gets expensive.
At what point do you folks switch? Or do you switch at all?
At what point do you switch to crap booze?

I buy about half dirt cheap and half mid/low shelf booze, and try to employ that method.
It works great, the only problem so far is when drunk, I forget about it.
I still wait till I'm almost out to buy more though, so The last few days is usually spent drinking travellers club gin.

I don't, which might be stupid.
If I've accidentally bought some less tasty bottle of wine which I open early in the night, I do switch to something that I know it good and then drink the rest later - or give it to my wife who will happily consume it without flinching.

I drink Jameson most of the time. If I'm low on funds I'll drink Beam or 7. As far as beer, I never go cheap when I'm out. It may sound retarded but the only time I drink cheap beer is if I'm at home, or at a sporting event.

Never.
Although Castillo may be well rum at bars around here, and just so happens to be rather easy on the pocketbook--it is not crap.
As for going out, in my opinion $5.00 is expensive for a mixed drink, paying anything more would be crazy (or, for me, a very short night at the bar).

The cabin sits shut-down, cold-frozen and empty, dead mice in the traps, waiting for me to drink alone there in the dark.

I don't, I try to end the night with what I start it with. As always, my tastes get more expensive the more I drink. A beam Black night can turn into a Ardbeg night with the quickness.

Without reading any posts, you switch when either you realize the taste is not what you are after, or you ran out.

Re: At what point do you switch to crap booze?
i was just asking myself this question earlier tonight! after some boozing at the booze place, i made a stop at the store before going home. the usual suspects were there, with their usual price tags. then i said to myself, "ya know, why not just buy some cheap shit? you're drunk anyway. just buy some crap, and drink it. you won't even notice it's crap." then i realized that at some point, however fleeting, i would be undrunk, and would not like to drink said crap.
i guess this brings us back to the point of this thread in the first place. no one said anything about only drinking crap. i could have bought the regular stuff, then the crap as a supplement, but ehh. i'm lazy, i'm cheap, but i suppose i'm lazier than i am cheap. i just buy what i like, and am done with it.
though now i am half tempted to see how much money i could save if i tempered my booze spending by working cheap(er) booze into the mix. i've done the math on cutting out booze entirely, and while doing so would make me filthy rich, monetary wealth is not worth my sanity.

Yup. You don't have to be Sir Lord Von Monicle Tophat and drink nothing but 500yo cognac, but if you drink something average, you may want to switch to cheap crap when you don't know the difference.MeanOldLady wrote: no one said anything about only drinking crap.

2 cents :
stick with keeping your overall purchases at low-mid range. Keep a few good bottles around for when you feel like a treat or when you want to treat guests. If you keep your standards at an average level you won't break the bank. If you get hooked on good quality booze switching down to lower quality will be a harder transition. Keep your standards above rotgut but below premium and worrying about switching won't be a prob =)

there's such thing as cheap beer at a sporting event? guess it's all relative.Resident Asshole wrote:...the only time I drink cheap beer is if I'm at home, or at a sporting event.
why is my moral compass always pointed east? that's the direction of the nearest liquor store.
