Neat or on the rocks?

Post by jtgw »

I used to be snobbish about whiskey. You know, the type that thinks any dilution of the bottle-strength is some kind of mortal sin. But I've really come around to another view. The burn of neat whiskey (or any spirit) I have come to acknowledge is just not one of its pleasant traits. There's a way of enjoying good whiskey without scorching the throat.

Therefore, I prefer to pour it, at room temperature, over ice. The trick is to swirl it around until it gets nice and cold. When the temperature of the liquor approaches freezing, just enough of the ice has melted to remove the burn of the neat spirit, but not enough to make it unpleasantly weak and watery. Then you have to drink it quickly. Not necessarily down it in one, but don't dawdle over it for more than a couple of minutes. Otherwise, it becomes flavored piss, if you'll pardon my language.

I suppose you could treat it like a real cocktail, shake it with the ice and strain it out. That would solve the problem of the melting ice. But usually I'm inclined to drink my slug of whiskey too fast for the melt to be a significant problem. Plus, shaking pure whiskey with ice in a shaker is just weird.

ice in drinks is the main reason i live in america. that and i was born here.

but there are many liquors i prefer neat. it's a case-by-case thing.

it does act as an inertial dampner when walking with your drink, though.

If you have to use ice you are just covering the taste. Find a drink you like.

but what if i don't like the taste of alcohol?

seriously, i disagree. much like a drop or two of water can open up a scotch, a little ice can unlock flavors in some liquors. sometimes they are worse flavors, and you regret the ice, but sometimes they are better or more complex. of course this is all a matter of taste and personal preference.

also a big fan of the single, huge block of ice to chill a drink without watering it down.

I'm with Wingman on the ice issue. Around here it would be nigh unbearable to sit around drinking neat whiskey in the summertime. Of course, I would never put ice in fine spirits, but since I only ever get them when they are given as a present, I don't have to worry about having any during the summer. I do find, however, that ice can sometimes make otherwise good drinks worse. I like plenty of ice in my Old Crow, but very little in Teachers.

I love their FAQ on that site.

Question: What if I don't like whiskey?

Answer: Drink some anyway. It'll put some hair on your chest.

Sometimes, on the rocks can be kinda neat in it's own way.

I like my whisky neat, because at room temperature, more odours are released, and I just love the smell of a single malt. Even sniffing it gets you already a little bit intoxicated (infatuated?). It's like seeing a beautiful woman naked, before touching her, and you know you're going to have sex with her. That's what smelling whisky is all about. It's erotics, with the promise of sex. And then you put the (room temperature) whisky to your lips. Oh boy, that fiery liquid running in your mouth and down your throat, and you being able to follow its tract down to your stomach. Neat is is for me guys, any time.

I've thought about getting the whiskey stones, haven't seen them in a while. I think I might.

As for me, I like most brown liquors room temperature, and most clear liquors as cold as you can get them. with bourbon I like to pull a "nixon" and add one ice cube. It honestly doesn't even chill the drink much, it just lets off a satisfying clink.

It also varies. Basically, I'll try something room temperature. Sometimes it's good, and sometimes it's very astringent and odorous, in which case It goes in the freezer.

I love this analoy. It's likely i'll use it sometime in the future. Considering I'll porbably be more innebriated than I am now and am likely to forget where i first heard it I am giving credit to you now.
