Two New Ryes, Well One is Just New to Me

Old Overholt, new to me but an old brand, cheap and bitey but I've heard pretty good for the $20 buck price tag. Not tried it yet but I have a little free time tonite so later I will sample and attempt to review.

Dad's Hat is a new distillery in the old home of Rye distilleries right here in my home state of Pennsylvania. This one is in Bucks County, north of Philly. Again tasting later tonite with a review to follow.

Love the Overholt, but you gotta look that old dude in the eye while you're drinking it. I've had it out with that fucker many times. The trick is not to avert your gaze until the bottle is empty lest he will sneak up on you.
I wish I could find more rye whiskeys in my area.

Ok, first impressions of the Dad's Hat. Nice color. Aroma is still quite raw. Reading the bottle, it says aged a minimum of 6 months. No mellow fellow this. Maybe if the distillery stays afloat long enough there will be older cousins of this batch floating around. Aside from the rawness of the aroma there is a hint of smokiness from the barrel and a faint sense of pepper. Generally not bad. Definitely different. Taste is young, raw, kissed by the aging barrel but hasn't gone "all the way" with it. Slightly medicinal but not like a scotch, somehow more country, like the Doc on Green Acres. Also finding an unexpected sweetness to it, just a touch, surprisingly like butterscotch. Where the hell did that come from? Don't know, don't care. I like it. Over riding it all, permeating it's being is the peppery presence of the rye.

Bottom line, this is pretty good stuff given it's short time on this Earth. I will buy it again and do so hope for some older, wiser offerings to follow. I must do some research on this distillery and make contact to see what the future may hold for this brand.

I believe(?) the Dad's Hat folks make a white whiskey as well.

I've drank the Overholt many times over the years. Not the best rye I've ever had, but it'll do.

I like the old man. Good clean rye, I can drink it all night, straight, Manhattans, or Sazeracs.
It's always a good day to get ripped!

Overholt's awesome, in the sense of if you ask someone "what's your poison?" and they say "Old Overholt", at least you know you're dealing with someone who has a clue about what they like in their glass.

Old Overholt is ok, definitely the cheapest rye I've found, but it's only 80 proof, way too weak to use in a cocktail. Better for shots backed with beer.

Will keep an eye out for the dad's hat, but the best rye I've experienced is Bulleit.

Yes, the Bulleit is good, but for the price I'm sticking with OO.
I still haven't tried the Wild Turkey Rye. I've looked at every store in three counties but the stuff cannot be found. Nobody drinks rye around here but me I guess.

Ok, Old Overholt. For the price this is a nice value. Four years old so it has some maturity, unlike the reviewer. Only 80 proof. The aroma is boozy with a little medicinal smell. Seems there is a hint of cinnamon. This one seems to have a butterscotch note as well.

Taste is nice for a $20 bottle.Pepper, sweet, with a real bite at the end. Nothing too forward pretty mellow through the middle, all the flavors blend well. Hard to pick out anything outstanding. Quick bite at the finish. Definitely going to stay on the rotation for when money is tight.

I haven't tried any of those two, not available, even though we do get a good selection over here. I have just finished a Van Winkle Reserve Rye 13, and a Thomas H Handy, and (another) Sazarac 18 -- some of the finest American whiskies going. Some good ryes out there, i do love the Russell Reserve 6yo Rye and the Willet Family Reserve Single Barrel, both new to me over the last year.

I've seen the Willet Reserve at my favorite candy store. Any thoughts, other than just good? Buy at all costs or more you'll enjoy it when you get to it.

Just got a bottle from my wife last week.

Go out and fucking buy it right now, is my advice. 110 proof, and entirely too smooth for that strength. Makes an absolutely perfect Manhattan. It's seriously phenomenal.
