Derby Day Saturday! Mint Juleps anyone?

Post by Patchez »

Hell yes I'll have some. At the OTW. All day long. Just need to win enough to cover the bar tab.

Well good luck then.
Bukowski always had cheap red to his bets I think, but it was dog races wasn`t it?
I`m not into betting but has any of you folks ever won a sum worth bragging about or were you always short on the dollar in the end?

I was taught to bet on numbers 2 and 5 (I have no idea why). I would bet to win and to place and would generally lose.

Since reading Bukowski I now only bet on one horse, and only to win. I try to study the form too but I don't really know what I'm doing.

My friend and I went to a Bukowski reading about 2 years ago and thought, in true buk style, that we'd get smashed beforehand and bet on the horses. My friend had never bet before.

We sat outside in a pub next to a TAB (betting shop). We had a drink while checking the form, selected our horse and placed our bet to win. We then focused on drinking a bit more. i sent my friend in to check the ticket after a while, without either of us knowing the outcome.

She came out amazed, we had won about $150 from our $10 bet. She thought this racing gig is easy! That paid for our drinks for the night.

We then went and saw the reading, heckled the readers, drank a shitload and my friend woke up the next morning without her pants (but that's another story).

Apart from that I usually lose when betting.

So the lady with no pants was kind of a win, too. If that were to happen everytime I went gambling I don't think I'd care how much I lose.

Also always bet the gray horse.

Totally missed Preakness, but I'll still drink to it

Preakness Stakes was today in Baltimore and instead of enjoying a great day-drinking day, I chose to drive up and down the goddamn beltway from goddamn chore to goddamn chore, all while completely dry.

Well, no need to mope. I have the makings of a Black-eyed Susan and I plan to take advantage tonight.

I think "better late than never" should be figured in to the Top 20 Drunkard Mottos anyway.

Never had a mint julep but always wanted to try one. And I want the real deal, not one I attempt to make myself. Pretty sure I'd hate it anyway because I'm not a bourbon drinker but it wouldn't stop me from tryin'.

They're surprisingly refreshing and you wouldn't expect it.

The trick is the sugar, mint and ice. Don't think about the bourbon. If it's good bourbon it's characteristics will remain. The ice will dull it down so that the mint and sugar take the center stage.

I don't drink bourbon as much as I used to, but I love the Juleps. I can see how the Derby ends up decadent and depraved as you can go through 3 or 4 of them without even realizing what you've done.

Ditching the mint and sugar I could see maybe enjoying a julep on broiling hot day in August.

That may be the vilest concoction ever foisted on the drinking and betting public. Worst of the Triple Crown drinks.

It's like a whiskey sour gone horribly wrong.

haha, yeah, the Julep is better.

But I didn't mind it. I did make some changes though.
Instead of orange juice, I substituted it with mango-pineapple. And I made my own sour mix.

It wasn't that bad. But just to be sure, I'll make one for Jack n Coke this weekend. She hates anything overly alcoholic. So if she likes this then there has to be some merit there.
