Nearly ruined another computer last night

Post by sloweducation »

At about 3am this morning I decided my computer would like some of my Christian Brothers and proceeded to spill it all over the damn laptop keyboard. This is the second time this has happened. Granted, the first time it was Maker's Mark and my computer was ruined. I think the computer is OK this time around. I quickly sopped up the brandy with a paper towel, wrung out the paper towel into my glass, and put the computer in front of a fan to forget about until the morning. It turned off immediately the first 10 times I tried to run it. I had pretty much given up. But now tonight it is working.
I know you beautiful drunks have your drinks near your computer. Does this happen to you guys?

I've gotten pretty good at not spilling in general. Or least aiming it away from my lap, which is where to laptop usually is.

My current keyboard has seen beer, vodka, gin, tonic, bourbon, scotch and god knows what spilled over it and is still working. I however do have a back-up keyboard about, just in caes.

There was one time when I managed to knock half a bottle of red wine over the 6-way power cable that runs by my PC. I kind of froze whilst it glugged over all the sockets and then I quickly switched the power off. Luckily it didn't do any damage...

I came this close to ruining my laptop (and my college degree) once. I spilled some (actually make it half a tall glass) Vodka Sprite on it, but had the presence to immediately turn it off, flip it up side down, dry it out with some towels, a hair dryer (thank god my GF was home that day), left it alone for a few hours. This was about 2 yrs back, when I was finishing off my Master's, was praying all the bloody gods, liquor bottles in the world that the hard disk was not ruined. Because if it did, I was basically screwed. BIG TIME. All the 6yrs (4+2) of my college work was on that thing, being a retarded college student for most of the time, of course, I didn't even think of backing anything up. And I was just about to finish off my thesis report, was about to graduate in a few months. Talk about a wake up call!

Luckily, all my post-spill containment measures worked (unlike - BP), I was able to get away with just replacing the keyboard for about $50. Phew!

Ever since, I am extra cautious of liquids around any of my laptops. Yes, I do regularly have them , but always have an extra eye out for them, place them in such a way that they will sort of spill away from the laptop.

the space monkey has a good point. i've actually never owned a desktop, unless you count my parents' computers. even then, the last time i relied on my parents' computers was 10 years ago. typically, though, i'm using the computer in bed or on the sofa, so my glass is elsewhere; this doesn't lend to much spilling on my computer. what drunkards really need to avoid is carpet. thank the gods for resolve! were not for it, my carpet would be completely covered in red wine and bourbon stains.

i need to move to a place with hardwood floors again.

I have a desktop a mere 12 steps from where I sit with my laptop, but I am lazy, and like to haul my puter over to the man cave lazy boy from time to time. Oh, and I prefer Shout for removing those unwanted carpet boo-boos.
