Besides just plainly being excellent, Caol Ila is also an excellent introductory Scotch, in my opinion. Not too forward on the peatiness, with a nice balance.
Patchez once wrote about the scent of a really good Scotch, "The smell of a creosote soaked railroad tie baking in the hot sun" or something much better written that that...
But i swear, we were checking out free booze at a beer/bourbon and BBQ event (I forget the name if it) in Timodium and I happened upon a special batch of Laphroig which tasted like smoked mackerel to me.
I held the other half of my shot in that lanyard shot-glass-neck-holder thing and found him at the Blanton's table, yammering away about his love for it, and I had him blind taste this smoked mackerel liquid.
His eyes went big, like crazy marbles, and then he run off like a dog on a rabbit trail: he went a-hunting. He found that table, and had more than he was supposed to of moar free sips of it.
Pro-Tip: never stand in the path of a hairy tree trunk that's honed in on his prey.

I vaguely recall that.

Which blends have you had? Also which blends have you liked? You can Google most blends and fine the main single malt for the backbone of the blend. Chances are if you liked the blend you'll like the single malt that supports it.
For instance if you liked the Johnny Walker blends Caol Ila is the backbone. Start there.
My go to scotch is a blend, Duggan's Dew. I tried googling what the main single malt is and I found were reviews saying the same thing I say about Duggan's: it ain't bad for the price. The only single malt that I have experience with, that I can remember, is Glenfiddich 12 year old. Excellent whisky.
