beer snobs vs. bourbon snobs

Post by whiskeyprick »

What's the difference? not much, though I think beer snobs had more knowledge of the process. Bourbon snobs are just hoity toity snobs who want to impress their friends cuz they spent more money on some allocated bourbon no one else could find. Occasionaly my reps do me favors cuz I did one for them and I get some, but stop coming in every day and asking or calling, they were gone within 3 hoursl

I think you're right about beer snobs usually being more knowledgeable about the product and process. Something else to consider: most bourbon/whiskey snobs don't do very well in blind tastings which speaks to the influence of label and prestige over actual quality itself. Though truth be told, I do enjoy letting a beer snob talk themselves into a corner before ripping them apart with an actual education in fermentation sciences.

as a beer snob with a fairly average wage you can afford to try pretty much anything...even super heavily sort after shit is not tooooo prohibitively expensive.

this is certainly not true with bourbon....or most other booze really.

beer snobbery is the working mans snobbery.

I occassionally engage in beer snobbery but I'm fast losing interest. Give me a good cold cheap beer, Genesee, any day.

Does Evan Williams qualify as the height of bourbon snobbery?

As a snob on a lot of things, I try to engage in snobbery every now and then. Sadly I fail on beer as I think London Pride is the pinnacle of beer. People tell me "try this coco vanilla latte imperial stout". I say "£8 for a 440ml can! I'll grab a doombar instead pal!"

On whisky and spirits as a whole, generally don't drink much bourbon, I think once you go over the £20 mark the returns you get on a fine spirit kind of reduced. The best whisky i've ever drank was Lagavulin 16 year old. It was pretty fantastic. I've also had a pretty good time necking a Bowmore 12 year old.

Then again I drink for the buzz. I like quality, I appreciate quality, but once that buzz starts it might as well be supermarket brand vodka.

Bourbon snobs are worse. It's always the same shit: Blanton's, Eagle Rare, Elmer T. Lee, etc. Yawn.

Beer snobs have an extravagant variety to raise their snoots at. They also seem to have better beards.
Don't worry. We're in no hurry.

Scotch snobs are a bunch of moldy-assed fuddy-duds and kilt sniffers.

I am all of these and none of these. I love great beers, bourbons, and scotches. I also neck swill in those categories with equal enjoyment but for vastly different reasons. Great stuff to savor and enjoy and swill to get wrecked. Great stuff is too expensive to get bent with and swill is too shitty to savor.

I wanted to post "cause it is less likely you fuck up something in the brewing process" and thought: No, cheep bear tastes better but if you do something wrong, it is way worse than a mishap in the whisky-lab.

I've said it before most snobs couldn't pick Evan Williams out of a line up of bourbons 10 to 40 bucks over it's price range. It just punches way over it's weight class. Elijah Craig is the same.
