Rye Whiskey makes a comeback!

Post by Patchez »

As a Pennsylvanian I am happy to see the states storied whiskey style making a comeback. When you ordered a "whiskey" pre-prohibition days you were 9 times out of 10 gonna get a rye. Most likely a Monongahela/Pennsylvania style rye or a Maryland style rye. With the resurgence of interest in cocktails the return of ryes has followed.

Prohibition killed all the distilleries on the east coast. Most of which were rye makers. The only ryes that survived prohibition were the big distillers in Kentucky that had a rye in their line. However these were 95% rye and 5% malt mash bills. Kind of a one note wonder.

With the craft cocktail boom there was a market for crafted complex ryes to go with the old standard cocktails and the "riff" on those classics. We are now seeing a huge uptick in craft ryes.

Linked below is an article from Distiller where I lifted the above info.

Out of thaT article I have found 3 that I need to find and four others that I'll find if Bacchus bestows his blessing.

Need:
Catching Creek Roundstone Rye
Far North Roknar Minnesota Rye(looking at you Badfellow)
Mad River Distillery Revolution Rye

Hope:
Peerless Kentucky Straight( one of the survivor ryes I have yet to find)
Rossville Union
Willet Family Estate Rye
Wilderness Trail Kentucky Straight Rye.

How do these differ? I could Google it but I trust Patchez Wisdom more.

PA style is just rye and malted barley while MD is rye, corn and malted barley in their respective mash bills.

Balcones has a whiskey that's 100% rye on the mash. I had it like two years ago but I don't remember anything about it.

Old Overholt 114 proof (with the black cap) will kick you in the dick for under 30 bucks. That is a deliciously intoxicating bargain, fuck a bunch of craft shite.

Patchez, what are your thoughts on Old Overholt, Rittenhouse Rye, and Dickel Rye?

The O.O. is old school rye. The same style our pre prohibition rye.

Rittenhouse is fantastic, a real powerhouse.

Still haven't had the Dickel.

Probably start with Rittenhouse, it is available at local stores for $26. No this if offtopic, but neither my local liquor store or the supermarkets around me had Bun or Ardbeg, would Johnnie Walker Black Double Black be an acceptable intro for peated scotches?

Or should I spring for Laphroaig Quarter Cask which goes for about 75 or 80 bucks in my area?
