I had a 5th of 100 pf Very Old Barton for 11.99 plus a buck tax. It was fantastic.FNZ wrote:The green label HH is just a few bucks more but lightyears better.TheBigCasino wrote:the best, right here.Oggar wrote:Another of my favorite basement Bourbon's is Old Heaven Hill.
My vote goes for the 80 proof Very Old Barton. I'm not sure about the other proofs (there are three) or sizes, but the 1.75 is around under a double sawskie.

I can't find V.O.B. out here, hell, I couldn't even find it when I was on the east coast.FNZ wrote:The green label HH is just a few bucks more but lightyears better.TheBigCasino wrote:the best, right here.Oggar wrote:Another of my favorite basement Bourbon's is Old Heaven Hill.

Re: Cheapest of the cheap whiskies?
Sainsburys used to sell some "canadian" whiskey...maple leaf or something. It was like £6 a bottle a couple of years back, was remarkably drinkable for the price. In fact it didn't burn, the problem was more lack of any flavour than being too strong if anything. Anyway it was great for getting absolutely mullered on due to it being so easy to afford and to quaff the shit out of. Made me ill on several occaisions (usually cos i was mixing it with oxycodone and diazapam due to two unrelated medical conditions)...

I think it's about £9 now - never plucked up the courage to try it as a I've kind of assumed it would be be pretty rank... Sainsburys branded Bourbon at £12.95 is still the best cheap whisky in my opinion.captain gonzo wrote:Sainsburys used to sell some "canadian" whiskey...maple leaf or something. Its....ok....I mean its not nice. But at £6 it was brilliant. It just had pretty much no flavour. It was smooth enough and REALLY easy to drink. I quite like ALDI's bourbon....great shit that. Better than JB white label.kowalski wrote:I think it's about £9 now - never plucked up the courage to try it as a I've kind of assumed it would be be pretty rank... Re: Cheapest of the cheap whiskies?
The way I understand it, the Aldi chain is divided up between two factions of the same family and they've carved up the European marketplace among them. I wonder if local Aldi in Belgium is part of the same marketing group as England? I never realized Aldi stocked a "house bourbon"...gonna have to check on it.captain gonzo wrote:Its....ok....I mean its not nice. But at £6 it was brilliant. It just had pretty much no flavour. Re: Cheapest of the cheap whiskies?
that aldi bourbon is damn good for the money, yet to try their single malt which is around £16, just tried a glen moray classic single malt from asda, was £18. (it's only an 8 yr old but easy drinking with a splash of water), and a bailie nicol jarvie ( blend ) for £15 from makro

Re: Cheapest of the cheap whiskies?
tax is something like 25 pounds a litre on pure alcohol in the UK, so a bottle of whiskey can't be had for less than about 8 pounds, which works out $12-13

Re: Cheapest of the cheap whiskies?
Sadly I've watched my favorite bottom-shelf bourbon - Evan Williams green label - go up in cost steadily over the past 3 or 4 years. Now it's up to $9.25, while when I first began buying it the price was right, around $7.25. DAMN THIS ECONOMY.
