As a Wisconsin resident and Beer lover, I can say that you have chosen some fine examples of our state's products. If you go to good liquor stores, you're bound to find most, if not all, of those brands, along with several others, represented on the shelves, which makes it hard to choose what to throw in the cart.
Hate life all you want; it's still the best place to get a well mixed martini. - Palinka

I don't remember being drunk in Wisconsin quite a few times. Squeaky cheese cures were reason enough to travel up across the border. Gonna have to see if I can track some of them beers down on the west side of the Mississippi.

Your best bet is to make a quick road trip to Hudson, WI just on the other side of the river. There's a store there, Chicone's Liquor Mart, that carries the harder to find WI beers. I know that New Glarus and Tyranena aren't distributed in MN, so I'll usually pick them up there.Tyerod wrote: Gonna have to see if I can track some of them beers down on the west side of the Mississippi.

In related notes, the Blonde Dopplebock from Capital Brewery came out the winner of the weekend, which is to say the one I missed most once the supply was depleted. Smooth, malty and STRONG. I would equate it to a malt liquor brewed by someone that actually gave a shit about quality. Nowhere on the label or their website could I find an a.b.v. listed but I'm guessing at least 8%. I'd love to find a bar in Madison where they serve liters of this on tap, that and deep fried cheese curds.

Aaah...just a little farther west. Colorado to be exact. Couldn't take the humid flatlands anymore. I had quite the sticker shock when I saw how much booze cost out here. That and the fukin liquor stores are closed on Sunday.

Aventinus is the best, Ayinger Ur-Weisse coming in a close second. Franziskaner is good, but not quite up there with those two. Wheat beer is great for starting out with, or if you're thirsty.
The last thing that anyone should ever do is feel ashamed of blacking out. You were trying to get drunk last night and, goddamnit, mission accomplished.

I got an advance tasting from my liquor store guy of Leinie's upcoming summer brew. It was a hefe-style beer but very citrus heavy, just a hint of bologne. Not bad, drank it on the porch a couple weeks ago.
I can't write like Papa, you know I just ain't able

you guys are killing me today. "baloney sandwiches"! HA!Oggar wrote:It still fails to point out nearly all hefeweizen taste like baloney sandwiches. I can't be the only one who knows this.
I like Paulaner, but you can't beat Schneider. I'm just sayin'. Also, I love drinking Schneider because, well, it's my last name!
I second the bubblegum part, but leave you with the delicious comment. It tastes like preserved bubblegum--on tap, out of the bottle, or an American knockoff.headlessparrot wrote:Not balogna... more like bananas and bubblegum.Oggar wrote:It still fails to point out nearly all hefeweizen taste like baloney sandwiches. Delicious bananas and bubblegum.
One bottle Review--Hardy's Whiskers Blake Tawny Port
I picked up a bottle of this from BevMo, and Port doesn't sit well, so I decided to drink it all in one go.
First glass--I poured it into my commemorative Lucky Baldwin's Belgian beer festival glass, because it ahs a nice shape for allowing the wine to breathe. At 18% ABV it is pretty spicy, but the tawny nature of the fruit gives it a honeyed texture which marries well. I was sipping at a glass of Pappy Van Winkle 20 year, and the two shook hands over my tastebuds, but decided to keep their own company.
About two thirds of the way into the bottle I started watching Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. I had purchased some Paul Mason Brandy to try an American Brandy for a change, and peeled the foil off that boy. Mistake. Far too sweet--it was like unrolling vanilla-flavored toilet paper over my tongue and then trying to wash it off with syrup. Of course, I may have been a bit overzealous in application of both products. Or in my use of the house shake from a local Far-macy. Some sparkling water cleared it up.
Finished the bottle and was not impressed. I'm really much more of a ruby Port kind of guy, and enjoy the mid shelf stuff like 6 Grapes and Sandeman's that run $20-$30 per bottle. Going lowball on the price of an 8 year port was a poor choice here. Might be good for cooking.
High Points: I didn't black out and I didn't throw up
Low points: I should have drank the bottle of Rittenhouse Rye. Well, there's always Zombie Jesus Day for that.
