Reason: changed real name
Major Strasser: What is your nationality?
Rick: I'm a drunkard.
Captain Renault: That makes Rick a citizen of the world.

There's a YouTube channel from a German named Thomas Gast telling about his time in the French Foreign Legion. In one of his videos he tells of how the English would sit at one end of a bar drinking, the Germans at the other end, and within about a half hour or so, a beer bottle would fly and the fight would start. He said they always shook hands after the fight and everyone would be comrades again.

In another video he tell of an instance in the barracks during boot camp where he was approached by three Turks who were trying to steal his boots. He said an Englishman saw what was happening, ran over and whipped all three Turks and gave him his boots back. Perhaps race trumps nationality, at least in the French Foreign Legion.

On a different tangent, perhaps this German stand up comedian can offer some insight into the stern and humorless cultural morays that permeate throughout Teutonic tradition.

Brits are uptight in their own way, but at least they have a great sense of humor. Not like those frumpy, goose-steppin' krauts with their lederhosen all in a bind.
