Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon VS Wizard of Oz?

Post by daphne »

I just got done dd'ing Grip, and since I mentioned "Pigs" by Pink Floyd on my favorite of their albums, Animals, he asked me if I'd ever did the "Wizard of Oz and Dark Side" thing. I hadn't.

And this bothers me. I've always loved Floyd. Really. Their music peaked when rock peaked, in my opinion (which, obviously, now, is not so educated) Pink Floyd was in their hayday. The Seventies and the surrounding years were a sort of golden age for exploration for rock and roll. Breakfast in America, Exile On Mail Street, The Wall, Quadraphenia, Tommy, even Born to Run, were sort of albums where the listener takes a journey with the artist, and it was good. But, this concept, of listening to The Dark Side of the Moon while one watches the Wizard of Oz, simultaneously played (and then the Dark Side played again) with the Wizard of Oz's sound turned down had somehow passed me by.

Did you all know about this? If so, how did I miss it?

Done it, it works pretty well. You have to wait for the MGM lion to roar three times before beginning the CD.

Highlights include the Scarecrwo dancing to the lunatic is on the grass and Money playing as Dorothy opens the door and first spots Munchkinland in Technicolor.

I first heard about it when I was in high schoolbut that's not surprising since my group of friends included a few stoners,a load of music geeks and a couple of floyd fanatics(surprisingly they weren't the stoners)

I never did this in my younger years, but I've always heard that good acid was required to really complete the experience.

It's mostly a myth but it still sort of works.

You have to start the album at a very specific point, as opposed to the normal beginning of the film. More parts of it don't match up than do, but there are enough happy coincidences, especially if you're willing to suspend disbelief and are extremely stoned, to make it fun to do.

That is, if you like Pink Floyd, which, in itself, implies you're already really stoned.

Hi Daphne,

I never knew this either. However, I did recently watch a Dark Side of the Moon dvd which was a retrospective on the group and the album and enjoyed it tremendously. Learning about what lead up to the album and what happened afterwards, both to the group and to society was cool.

Also, being middle-aged myself, seeing the band both older and when they were young really struck home.

The myth is:

David Gilmore purposely made this album to fit this movie.

Fact:

It's a complete myth, just coincidentally his music is written in the same time as the soundtrack to this film, and would work with other musicals as well.

Like I wrote before, the MGM Lion must roar three (3) times before you press start on your CD player.

I can't add much more to what Barca said. It's interesting, and the music does compliment the movie for the first run of the album. After that, it doesn't seem to line up as much, but by then I was so stoned I could have added a chapter to the bible: The Gospel According to Floyd.

For those of us drunkenly inclined, it would be a nice peaceful way to drift off to sleep after a good night of drinking.
Baby, your body is so beautiful I wish I was an artist so I could paint it. As it is, I'll have to settle for taking a picture with my digital camera and selling copies to middle school kids for 5 bucks a piece.

I have heard of this and never tried it. As a matter of fact, I have never seen the Wizard of Oz.

IF you smoke enough pot and put DSOTM while watching bowling, that would be cool too.

i've heard that if you watch Pink Floyd The Wall and put on the CD Pink Floyd The Wall, there some amazing similarities.
