It gets a little shaky with its accurate portrayal of how humanity might respond to those circumstances.

Specifically to the first episode: When Shane tells the wife that she can't go running off from the group to put up warning signs on the highway because her son has already lost a father and she shouldn't put him in the position to lose a mother, she responds -- I'm paraphrasing here -- like, "You're right. I'm basing my desires on unchecked emotions, but your response is rational and based on reason, so I will listen to you."

yeah, overall good shit. i, too, could suspend my disbelief and be okay with, well, walking dead, but had some problems with specific writing and characterization.

booze helps with that, though.

i especially liked the post-zompocalypse atlanta. that guy was nowhere near the cdc, though.

It's going to happen one day. Obviously not actual zombies, but when the shit goes down it's going to be utter pandemonium.
This is why I am so glad I have a remote, self-sufficient, totally off the grid place to escape to.

seriously, though, one thing The Redhead and i were talking about with "walking dead" is, no matter what the cataclysm, cities are deathtraps....

They will not find me--at least for a long long time. They'll be way too busy in the highly populated areas. My self-sufficient (albeit very rustic) abode is pretty far off the beaten (or any) track. Plus, has the advantage of having only one remote winding paved road leading to the access point (after that it's at least 6 miles into the woods). And this road has a bridge that could easily be 'taken out' if one has the right equipment to do so...

Ever read 'The Road' by Cormac McCarthy? Not zombies, but post-apocalyptic. One of the best books I've ever read. My refuge wouldn't do me much good in that case--if everything is dead and/or dying, living off the land soon becomes a non option.

yeah. can't say i enjoyed that book, but really well written. my kid being the same age and gender as the kid in the book had a lot to do with that. even in that, the guy at the end says, "we gotta get you off the road...."

I didn't say the book would fill one up with warm fuzzies---it is a horrific, hideous and tragic story. What is beautiful about it is the relationship/love between the father and his boy. They are literally each others world. And yes, it is very well written. McCarthy's stark bleak prose fits perfectly with the subject matter.
I have 2 boys myself, and I think a parent tends to get more out of this book than someone who doesn't have children, being that we can picture ourselves in the situation with our own child.

Enough of my ramblings. Off to get a beer. Good thing zombies don't drink. When they start taking over, all the more for me.
