it looks like the deep south, but it's actually filmed in California, they hung vines from the trees to give the film a southern look.

George Kennedy's Clarence Dragline is probably the single best performance I have ever seen by a supporting actor. It was one of those roles that no one else could play, no one, I don't care who you got, no one could ever, ever play Dragline like that.

When this movie came out (@late Spring/1967) I saw it 8 times in 7 days at a theater in the next SoCal town over from mine. I was 15 years old. The head count nightly reminds me about first evening-off during service time. I was barely standing, but I recall reporting "7 men in, one puking in the shower and I think we've one lost". The sergeant gave a small nod, looked little bit less than happy and left. It's stange how much drunken debauchery you can achieve in 3 and half hours.
The movie be rockin' as well.
P.S You must really suck at boxing, if someone who got their feet chained together whoops your ass around that much.
