Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is not a good movie. It seems like a lot of people watch it for the first time after already deciding that it's the type of movie that they should like, and then they end up not being as judgmental about it as they should be. There is nothing wonderfully creative about just repeating a scene where guys take drugs and weird stuff happens. The least he could have done was make it funny. I think people mistake bizarreness for bizarreness's sake as some kind of brilliant artistic masterpiece.

I remember finishing reading Fear and Loathing just a few months before the movie came out. I thought there was no way for anyone, Terry Gilliam or anyone, to make that movie anywhere near capturing the scenes in the book. I was wrong, I thought the movie was great. I thought it was funny. Yeah the book was better, but I still enjoy actually seeing the stuff. Less reading. Drugs and all that

I couldn't disagree more. I thought it did a pretty good job converting that book to film.
I'll miss you, pallie.

I'm not sure if I have ever seen the end of Fear & Loathing.
In general, though, I do think that Terry Gilliam films have weak endings, kind of like Mel Brooks' films.

I get the feeling, especially when it comes to Gilliam, that he doesn't know how to "end" a film. I do enjoy his films, but he was very, very close to becoming a one trick pony for a while.

Wait now. F&LiLV is a movie based on Hunter S. Thompson's book with the same title. It's not only based, it's pretty much a word for word screen adaptation that not only captured the book perfectly but also captures HTS perfectly. F&LiLV isn't supposed to be funny, not in any way, not by any amount. It gets bizarre which makes you smile or laugh but it's not comedy. If you want funny (funny-bad) perhaps you should try Where the Buffalo Roam with Bill Murray which is also a screen adaption of the book but which didn't capture the essentials of the story and the spirit of HST.

And, this just happens to be one of my absolute favorite movies, not to say The.

Sideways is a nice movie that centers around drinking wine.

PS, may your bourbon turn into water for talking down on F&LiLV!

So that being numero uno I also want to put down a number two; Barfly.

Apart from those two I can't really recall any movie that stands out that much.

Shrooms is a good movie that surprised me but while it's all "caused" by the "shrooms" it's not very much about drugs.

Leaving Las Vegas hasn't been mentioned yet. I perhaps wouldn't put it on a top 10 list but it deserves to be mentioned as the story it all about the main characters attempt to drink himself to death. Also the poolside-champagne-boobs-scene is worth mentioning. A bit too much of a depressive drama though.

The Hangover is good fun but again, not that much about drinking and more about the consequences of having too much fun. The sequel on the other hand sucks giant donkey dicks.

I didn't say that I thought it was supposed to be a comedy- I said that jokes in the script would have least been something happening as opposed to nothing happening. It's not a bad movie because it's not funny, it's a bad movie because it's repetitive and it quickly becomes obvious that it isn't really going anywhere.

There's a full 40 percentage point difference in the average rating of professional critics and user reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, and not a single one of the nation's top critics thought it was a good movie. It could be that the people who judge these types of things for a living are just The Man and they don't appreciate great alternative works of art, or it could just be that they are less likely to feel obligated to pretend to like something. Either way, I can't help but to wonder how many of the user reviews claiming to think it was a 5/5 movie have actually ever sat through the entire thing.

It falls into my "If you drank two more beers I bet I could get you to admit that movie wasn't that great" category.
