Great Modern Drunkard Songs: The Redux

Post by 3 »

Watching Mighty Mighty Bosstones tickets go for $580 on eBay for 2, and listening to "Another Drinking Song" to soothe my pain. MMB were my first concert 19 years ago and it pains me to not be able to afford to see their reunion shows.

What's your classic drinking song? Looking for more recent gems here as we all know the hoary old classics.
"Well I took a fifth, and I poured me a shot.
And I thought about all the things that I haven't got,
And I drank that down, and I poured me some more
Kept drinking and pouring till I felt the floor"

I saw this band in 96, and I'll be god damned if I never see them again.

That being said, if you ever need a reason to drink play "Cheap Wine" by Darkbuster.
Still just figuring it all out. Still not really figuring it out.

Tool never fails. Hooker With a Penis. Any questions?
The last thing that anyone should ever do is feel ashamed of blacking out. You were trying to get drunk last night and, goddamnit, mission accomplished.

For new songs, I think Alcohol by Brad Paisley is a fine effort.

Dropkick Murphys "Barroom Hero" belongs here for sure. And throw in the Spicy McHaggis Jig for those of us who have been unfortunate to have been there.

While not a genre I am particularly interested in, Canadian celt-dork rockers penned a good one with " Home for a Rest":

You'll have to excuse me, I'm not at my best
I've been gone for a month, I've been drunk since I left
These so-called vacations will soon be my death
I'm so sick from the drink I need home for a rest.

We arrived in December and London was cold
We stayed in the bars along Charing Cross Road
We never saw nothin' but brass taps and oak
Kept a shine on the bar with the sleeves of our coats

CHORUS:
You'll have to excuse me, I'm not at my best
I've been gone for a week
I've been drunk since I left
And these so-called vacations
Will soon be my death
I'm so sick from the drink
I need home for a rest
Take me home....

Euston Station the train journey North
In the buffet car we lurched back and forth
Past old crooked dykes through Yorkshire's green fields
We were flung into dance as the train jigged and reeled

- CHORUS -

By the light of the moon, she'd drift through the streets
A rare old perfume, so seductive and sweet
She'd tease us and flirt, as the pubs all closed down
Then walk us on home and deny us a round

You'll have to excuse me, I'm not at my best
I've been gone for a month
I've been drunk since I left
And these so-called vacations
Will soon be my death
I'm so sick from the drink
I need home for a rest
Take me home....

The gas heater's empty, it's damp as a tomb
The spirits we drank now ghosts in the room
I'm knackered again, come on sleep take me soon
And don't lift up my head 'till the the twelve bells at noon

You'll have to excuse me, I'm not at my best
I've been gone for a month
I've been drunk since I left
And these so-called vacations
Will soon be my death
I'm so sick from the drink
I need home for a rest
Take me home....

Definitely agreed about the Bosstones - also from them "The Bartender's Song" and "Drunks and Children", plus "Cowboy Coffee". Hell, I'm in Boston and couldn't even get tickets to any of the damn shows. Makes me pissed.

Other great drinking songs:

Gang Green - Alcohol
The Swaggerin' Growlers - Drunk Before Noon, Beer Women & Song
Stray Bullets - Bender, Whiskey in My Coffee
Faulty Conscience - Junk, TMC
The Pogues - Streams of Whiskey plus almost every other song they ever did
Leftover Crack - Rock the 40oz.
Dropkick Murphy's - Dirty Glass, Bar Room Heroes
Flogging Molly - Drunken Lullabies, Seven Deadly Sins, The Worst Day Since Yesterday
The Glow - 5 Pints
The Mahones - A Drunken Night in Dublin

There are so many more.
I'm not lookin for forgiveness
Fuckin' up is how I live this life
'Cause otherwise it takes too fuckin long

For the dark, introspective drunk that you know we all engage in from time to time, the Dresden Dolls' have a great one, "Me and the Minibar."
I didn't fight a secret war in Nicaragua so you could walk these streets of freedom badmouthing Lady America, in your damn mirrored sunglasses!
