Considering that guitarist Robby Krieger wrote 90% of the lyrics to all The Doors' charted hits, and that organist Ray Manzarek and Robby came up with all the melody lines, Jim Morrison made for a pretty fair, drunken singer.

I don't know if I agree with that though I know Krieger wrote some lyrics like most of light my fire. And Manzerick filled in when Jim was too fucked up to sing or couldn't make it. But if you have ever read the biography or Morrison's poetry you can't discount him like that in my opinion.

Agree with what you wish, but my good friend, John Densmore, laid it all out to me many years ago.
The only top-40, charted songs Morrison contributed lyrics to were "Love Me Too Times" and "Touch Me". Jim wrote all the "poet" songs, to be sure, but not the hits.
Btw...all of The Doors' original music was officially co-written by all four band members -- one of the few truly cooperative writing/publishing agreements of all time..

yeah that is informative but the "out ther lyrics/poetry" that won't appeal to the masses. I'ts great that the main hits got the public into it but at the same time it never would have opened the creativity of poetry and lyrics opened in my in opinion. And Krieger was a great lyrics and he's still alive but without the charisma of Morrison, but I love the group vibe together.
Krieger toured here a year ago and it's small clubs.

It's sort of like the liquor industry. Big companies will aspire to conquer every brand. A million and a half people make great blues and rock music. The ones that get record deals are the ones who become monopolists. They are the most well known and popular artists. It doesn't necessarily mean they're the "best". That being said, I love The Doors.

Actually, Hello, I love you was #1 in August 1968, and was written entirely by Morrison.
I agree Krieger was a much bigger influence on the band than he's given credit for, though.

Then, of course, there's Surreal from this here board - Surreal McCoys: Surreal is the HUGE guy (should see him in real life - bugger is HUGE - and gooooood lookin' - and he makes one hell of a breakfast) in the red hat and apparently gas station attendant uni. Have had the pleasure of his company - he's fanTAStic! A great guy.
Their live version of 'Gloria' is great. Really gets the blood going. I also have a thing for 'Peace Frog'.
Hunter Thompson wrote one time that a great way to relax was to put your stereo speakers outside, crawl onto your roof, and blast 'Morrison Hotel'. A bottle of Chivas was probably involved, too.
