In general, and in the specific case that follows.
Specifically, the lyrics "I would do anything for love, but I won't do that."
What the fuck does that mean? This has bothered me for years. If the first part of that lyric is true, then it either is negated or negates the second part. Or is there an understood "almost" or "pretty much" excusatory clause in there?
I once had a friend comment on Meatloaf, saying that his work was like showtunes without there being a show.

Please explain Meatloaf

Re: Please explain Meatloaf
Like with all his rock ballads, they got much too long titles. I think the aforementioned was way longer:
I would do anything for love,
ok rub your tiny dick with my poo and go outside screaming for love, than I`ll kiss you,
But I won`t do that.
I think he found his niche and got drunk being happy about it. End of story.

Re: Please explain Meatloaf
the "That" in question is always referring to the preceeding line.
As for meatloaf songs sounding like showtunes,he once said that everything Jim Steinman ever writes is for one neverending musical about peter pan

Re: Please explain Meatloaf
So he would "do anything for love" but he's not going to. Is this out of spite?
That's something that you don't get too many ballads written about: spite.

Re: Please explain Meatloaf
It's more affirming his love for the girl
"But I'll never forget the way you feel right now,
Oh no, no way
And I would do anything for love, but I won't do that
No, I won't do that"
"But I'll never forgive myself if we don't go all the way, tonight
I would do anything for love
Oh, I would do anything for love"
"But I'll never do it better than I do it with you. So long, so long
I would do anything for love
Oh, I would do anything for love
Oh, I would do anything for love, but I won't do that
No, I won't do that"
Now I've got that fucking song stuck in my head...

Trying to explain rock ballads huh. Let's get drunk and high on cocaine, then you will get your answer. This is how they were created. Good old times!

Re: Please explain Meatloaf
I hated the hair-metal power ballad era. Even though I was never a hair metal fan, the shift to power ballads ruined them all.
