ELVIS: There are a lot of great artists but there's only one King.

Post by Backbone Robby Bobby »

Unbelievable!
I just saw the Elvis- movie by Baz Luhrmann and you won't be disapointed. I'm reading about Elvis at least once a week since he passed when I was 8. Still I'm not a connaisseur compared to the real fans. However, I believe that they should have no fear go and watch this fabulous masterpiece. I understand why Lisa Marie and Austin Butler have become so close. He's unbelievable!

I was confident before going for two reasons:
-Lisa Marie who had been reclused since her son's suicide, came out of her silence to praise the movie.
-After having been screened at the Cannes- film festival in May, it received an historical (!) twelve minutes standing ovation.

I believe it's out in America this Friday. I won't spoil but if Joaquin Phoenix has barely recovered from his performance in Walk the line, Austin Butler is doomed.
I love this rock-a-billy revival among a certain youth in Europe and I really hope this will boost that classy sub-culture. Kids will understand that there's more to rock'n roll than...Freddie Mercury.

I'm a fan of The King. There's no one like him. I would check this out out for sure.

I hate myself for not having visited Tupelo, Mississippi or Graceland yet but I think an American over 40 has no excuse for not having been in Mississippi or Memphis. It should be an obligatory school trip. Also Artful, since sergent Presley was stationed in Friedberg, Germany for two years there must be some serious German Elvis- specialists.

I love Elvis and those who are possessed by him. I feel pity for all those people who have poor knowledge about him or worse, who still repeat all the bullshit from leftists who tried to destroy his legacy fifty yeras ago. Those lies are still pretty widespread. Actually, you can tell a lot about a person by what he really knows about Elvis.

Myself, I love Elvis like a brother, a father, a friend and nothing is fun in this world since he passed (or did he? as Chris Isaak puts it in Down in flames).
I believe that many men feel like the character Clarence Worley (Christian Slater) in the Quentin Tarantino written movie True Romance (with Val Kilmer playing Elvis) in his epic I'd fuck Elvis- speech.

Anyway, I can't wait to hear your impressions, you true American Elvis knowers after you will have seen ELVIS next Friday.
Making an ambitious biopic about Elvis was the biggest challenge of this century. Baz Luhrmann and Austin Butler are heroes because they had everything to lose!
I claim that today AUSTIN BUTLER is the most respected American in the whole world!

Here's some unusual Elvis stuff:
Eddie Murphy wrote:That’s my idol, Elvis Presley. If you went to my house, you’d see pictures all over of Elvis. He’s just the greatest entertainer that ever lived. And I think it’s because he had such presence. When Elvis walked into a room, Elvis Presley was in the f***ing room. I don’t give a f*** who was in the room with him, Bogart, Marilyn Monroe.
Elton John wrote:"Ask anyone. If it hadn't been for Elvis, I don't know where popular music would be. He was the one that started it all off, and he was definitely the start of it for me."
Gene Simmons wrote:Elvis is King. Period."
James Brown wrote:“I wasn’t just a fan, I was his brother. He said I was good and I said he was good; we never argued about that. Elvis was a hard worker, dedicated, and God loved him. Last time I saw him was at Graceland. We sang Old Blind Barnabus together, a gospel song. I love him and hope to see him in heaven. There’ll never be another like that soul brother."
Bob Dylan wrote:“When I first heard Elvis' voice, I just knew that I wasn’t going to work for anybody; and nobody was going to be my boss...Hearing him for the first time was like busting out of jail.”

President Trump honoring Elvis during a rally in Tupelo, MS
Alice Cooper meeting Elvis
Elvis and Mohamed Ali's bromance.
Elvis never looked for trouble. But he never ran.

Disparaging Freddy but quoting Elton, Gene Simmons and Bob Dylan to prove that Elvis rocked is kinda lackluster to me.

Elvis was only fun when he got obese, like a zoo animal that was taught but could barely sing

I'm not offended. I just want you to really know what you are talking about with your whole soul and learn your Elvis and...all the other rock'n roll rebels.

If you can't get enough Elvis here is recommended reading. This is the full biography with extensive references so you know you are getting the real story. Read how he hooks up with Ann Margaret thru his staff in Beverly Hills where they occupy an entire floor of the Beverly Wilshire Hotel.

I forgive you because like many you do not know what you are talking about. With all my respect Dear Oettinger. Many people like yourself have just taken the Elvis caricature for granted. All you need is education in Elvisology.

I'm a patient man. That is what age and self-criticism do to you. But seriously Oettinger... Will you turn the sound up and tell me seriously that this "obese zoo animal" can "barely sing" two month before his death? Will you?
Please do listen and reconsider your blasphemy. Elvis - Unchained melody June 1977

Fair enough. I didn't mean to diminish Freddie Mercury's legacy myself.

Have to agree with Oettinger, and I am big fan of Elvis. Elvis's later work is better than his early stuff. Suspicious minds is better than anything he sang when he was in his 20s.

Dear Stendhal and Oettinger. One does not discuss Elvis Presley like if he discussed Madonna à la "Yeah I liked when she was the tough broad" or U2. We are discussing Elvis here. It's important. It's dangerous. It's life or death.
I remember drinking in a hotel bar in southern France one night 'round 2010 and bumped in to a a group of American private pilotes. One of'em was a woman and I remember her saying refering to 9/11 "It's just sad that nobody there's for us when we need it".

Myself I will always be there for America and Americans because you gave me Elvis and rock'n roll. You could bomb an innocent democracy and I would still forgive you. You could bomb me and I would still forgive you. Why? For Elvis and rock'n roll. Country and blues made a baby and we call it rock'n roll.

Now check it! This is Modern Drunkard and the thread is ELVIS. So what was Elvis relation to booze? Elvis wasn't a boozer. He mostly drank Pepsi. As a yougster he once got disgusted by a bottle of peach brandy. Also his father Vernon had some troubles with the moonshine. But Elvis did smoke cigarettes. Everyday.
However, on June 2nd 1968, Elvis and Priscilla came back from Hawaii. Elvis was obviously in the first class but heard the band "The Young Americans" singing. The group was coming back from Vietnam where they had entertained the troops. He went to the back of the plane and got drunk on Mai Tais with everybody.
