Re: Seasonal Beers

Post by Badfellow »

Stopped into a small brewery yesterday to pick up some pizzas to go, and while I was waiting ordered a pint of their Summer Solstice Cream Ale. Advertised as having "a twist of citrus peel with a touch of coriander". Sounds delicious, I thought. But, hell nope, tasted like a corn cob had sloppy sex with a vine of Cascade hops.

Interesting to note: that whole "cooked corn" flavor in beer is caused by the chemical compound DMS or dimethylsulfide. It's a natural byproduct of most yeasts during fermentation.

Normally, the yeast will reabsorb DMS toward the end of the cycle as fermentation temperatures are "crashed" or decreased. If you get a beer that tastes like cooked corn or vegetables (something I don't care for one bit) it usually means the brewer was in a rush (or didn't care) and didn't allow enough time for the yeast to do it's proper work.

Picked some of these up recently in lieu of the crisp autumn weather that blew in. Hopefully it's good!

My Facebook reminded me that two years ago today I was drinking these in a tropical beer garden in Hawaii with my drunkard bestie. Can't remember what beer it was, but wish I was there drinking it right now on this below freezing day.

The biggest seasonal beer is Sam Adams Winter Lager. Sounds great but they went spice happy and it's just way to busy to be a lager. More like an ale.

St. Bernardus Christmas Ale is now available. Quite possibly the best beer ever made. Ever.

There are some advantages to living in a socialist controlled country that invented beer.

The monks who make that beer are religious socialists, most definitely. Like a communist Jesus co-op, man. And Belgium did not invent beer. Sumaria gets the credit for that original fermetation, so far as history has been recorded. The Belgians get credit for not being governed by the purity laws of the Reinheitsgebot of 1516.

The Belgians also get credit for resisting alcohol prohibition laws by creating higher gravity beers, thus essentially filling a gap in the lack of distilled liquor legally available at the time.

there is something about Kona Brewing beers that is really conducive to hot summers day day drinking....i say this cause despite it being late September Sunny Manchester seems to have had a last ditch attempt at summer today...was nice out, sunny and warm. I'd have got some Kona beers but the only place I know that stocks it is a supermarket like 5 miles away...i'm not that committed. hah

For autumn beers, I would go with dark or amber beers
