Lager-top is where you fill the glass until about an inch or a bit less from th top, then add a splash of lemonade to top it up, lager-lime is where you put a splash of Roses lime cordial in the bottom of the glass before pouring.

Both quite refreshing in summer months, and if you're at somewhere that only serves shitty lager (Carling...) can improve the taste of the drink a bit.

Anything mixed with lager is for poncy ponces. Even Carling alone tastes better than shandy... Seriously, shandy should be ranked alongside wine spritzers - after all, they're the same idea, but with lager instead of wine.

If it's a pub or homemade shandy (as opposed to the shite available ready made in tinnies), made with ale and lemonade (R.White's for prference) it can be useful For example, it's a good way to train the kids' palates to wean them off sugar water and it can put them to sleep for an afternoon.

To a certain extent it is true that a well made shandy, made with the right ale, can be a thirst quencher, but then I am someone who increasingly thinks of beer as something to do between drinks, anyway...
