My dear R-, trust me, they use beer batter at your local chip shop. It's a very old recipe.

I think the closest place that does beer batter is over a mile away, and much more expensive. I think a much better idea would be to do it myself now I have a deep fryer. Not completely sold on the beer batter thing though. Don't think it adds much, and you boil away all the booze in it
