Drink of the Week (Feb. 17th 2014)

Post by Badfellow »

I thought perhaps we might all be able to use a good, ol' fashioned Drink of the Week to promote cheer and good vigor. While personally I am not much of an Olympics fan (the biathaon would be much more interesting if they were shooting at each other), it is nevertheless recognizable as a great achievement that all nations of the world can set aside their differences and get together as one to dress in tacky outfits and compete for shiny baubles allegedly cast of precious metals. I salute the Olympic spirit(s).

All that jive being said, this weeks DOTW is a rather worldly cocktail crafted with ingredients intended to represent one of the seven continents of earth. If possible, serve the cocktail in a small brandy snifter that is as close to globe shape as possible. It packs a wee bit of a kick, but I imagine that's probably what you were looking for anyway.

Pangaea Cocktail

1 oz. Whiskey, preferably a straight bourbon......(North America)
1 oz. Cachaça..........................................(South America)
1 oz. Slivovitz Plum Brandy...........................(Europe)
1 oz. Arak...............................................(Asia)
1 oz. Amarula Cream Liquor..........................(Africa)
4 oz. Foster's Lager (beer back).....................(Australia)
Ice.......................................................(Antarctica)

Mix first four ingredients briskly over ice in a cocktail shaker. Pour into glass over several fresh ice cubes and float Amarula over top pouring gently. Serve beer back in seperate lowball glass. If so inclined, compete in the 1000 ml event.

I might try this when I go home next week and have access to my parents' extensive cocktail cabinet

Australians don't drink Fosters but I acknowledge that it might be the only 'Australian' beer you can get.

I suggest swapping with something from the Coopers Brewery if you can find them. The biggest Australian owned brewery in the country! I like the pale ale or the sparkling ale.

I made a few coopers beer kits and they were poor. Probably don't travel well
