Brilliant! I was just going off for a 30min sojourn into the hot tub and was wondering what to take with me. I've the stuff for regular people Hot buttered rums. I got dark rum, trader vics batter and a microwave.

I'm on this.

I found some recipes for this little treat for the parents during our Trick or Treat next week.

I am planning on using Sailor Jerry's for the rum.

INGREDIENTS:

2 cups firmly packed brown sugar
1/2 cup butter or margarine
1 pinch salt
3 cinnamon sticks
6 whole cloves
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
2 cups rum
heavy cream, whipped
ground nutmeg, for topping

DIRECTIONS:

Put all ingredients, except rum and cream, and nutmeg into crockpot. Add 2 quarts hot water. Stir well. Cover pot and cook on LOW for 5 hours. Add rum; stir to blend. Serve from pot in warm mugs with a scoop of whipped cream and a dusting of nutmeg.
I have to say...I am HBR's newest and biggest fan. Made this for the first time a few weeks back. We were using what we had on hand and didn't have cinnamon sticks or whole cloves so used them in powder form instead. I also added some allspice. oett was disappointed for his first time and thought it wasn't "buttery enough". I didn't know what to expect but was pleasantly surprised.

So I made it again today and did it the same only added the entire bottle of rum 'cause, why not, I ain't sharing with anyone that isn't a drunkard, and added a bit more butter. It was very thick and velvety, and oett approved. I don't have a slow cooker so I slow cook it in a pot on the stove. It makes for a very nice comforting holidayish aroma in the kitchen as well.

The whipped cream is key, as I didn't have that the first time either. I like to compare recipes to see if there are any spins on the traditional one. I read in one recipe that someone substituted heavy cream in place of some of the water, which I thought was an interesting twist. Might try that sometime.

If you take away anything from this, please note that most internet recipes call for 2 oz. of rum vs. Patchez' recipe of 16 oz. Of course you must go with the recommendation of a fellow drunkard. These lightweight Betty Crocker housewife recipes cannot be trusted as 2 oz. of rum is fit for a children's Halloween party. Although when I looked up Betty Crocker's actual recipe, she actually used 16 oz (2 cups) also. Betty was bringing it back in the day at her holiday parties no doubt.

That spray cream and extra butter was key.

And pour in the whole bottle of course. What are we waiting for?

You might as well drink egg nog with heavy rum. It gives you all you need for the day when you have shooters for breakfast.

The official Hot Buttered Rum Day is January 17 (for some reason). Either way, Hot Buttered Rum is a highly underrated drink. When it gets cold and gloomy, everyone needs a good excuse to tie one on. Plus, in my opinion, any bold and warm drink is pure cocktail comfort food. And, since there are really no rules, it's also a good excuse to use some of those liqueurs that have been gathering dust.

Mrs Booze likes to make up a big batch that can be stored in the refrigerator so all we have to do is heat up some water in the microwave, pour, stir, and drink.

She likes more butter than I do. I like about a tablespoon.

This is our "starter kit" recipe:
2 teaspoons brown sugar; butter; dash of vanilla extract; cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice to taste; Rum, Rye, or whatever booze we want.

We also stir in some heavy whipping cream if we have it.
DRINK!
