BTW...I've been following this situation and I'll make a couple of observations.TheBigCasino wrote:Just hoping the Knicks don't give up the entire team to get 'melo.
Of the two trade scenarios (Knicks/Nets), you can discard as fairly unimportant the various journeymen, bench-warmers and expiring contracts which are included in the respective proposals which, for the most part, are in order to make the salary numbers match. So what you're basically looking at is this:
The important Denver trade pieces are superstar F Carmelo Anthony and aging but still effective PG Chauncy Billups
The important Knicks pieces are PG Raymond Felton, G/F Wilson Chandler and F Danilo Gallinari.
The important Nets pieces are PG Devin Harris, rookie F Derrick Favors and four first-round draft picks.
You can debate the various pros and cons of PGs Felton and Harris but, both skills-wise, statistically and age-wise, they're fairly close. I'd give Felton a bit of an edge but it's pretty much a wash. So now we're left with this:
Denver's choice comes down to:
a) Chandler and Gallinari from the Knicks or
b) Favors and four first-rounders from the Nets.
Since Denver has made it very clear they're going to start rebuilding with youth if/when CA leaves, just from a future flexibility standpoint the Nets offer seems a no-brainer, IMHO. That the Nuggets haven't taken the Nets deal indicates that they and (especially) NJ have not been adequately convinced that Melo would sign a contract extension and remain with the Nets past the end of this season.
The big unknown factor influencing what Carmelo decides to do is his not knowing what might transpire regarding future NBA salary ceilings and structure under the next collective bargaining agreement. There is some speculation that the owners not only want to cut salaries on new contracts but existing ones as well, which might render moot the future financial benefits from any contract extension he might sign.
Bottom-line: absolutely NO ONE knows for sure, at this time, what these ongoing and contentious labor negotiations may bring.
