Two Hearted's Fishing Thread

Post by Two Hearted »

All right, here we go. This is a thread for all of us drinkers with a fishing problem. I thought I'd start it in the pub (as all of you fishers out there KNOW that fishing is always booze related), but caved and decided to put it in NBR.

I have already seen a couple of pics of Surreal's gorgeous steelies, and to him I say: I'll see your gorgeous river steelies, and raise you this one:

Image

Now obviously this wasn't caught anytime in the recent past (I'm getting cabin fever and scurvy up here due to the length of UP winters), but hopefully I'll get a few more like it this summer...

This fish was caught on two bottles of 'light breakfast wine', and numerous beers. (Damn, I really need to go into business creating and naming my own salmon lures!).

Now lets see your fish!
The cabin sits shut-down, cold-frozen and empty, dead mice in the traps, waiting for me to drink alone there in the dark.

Hit the water yesterday here for little fishing. Air temp - 75* and the water was glassy smooth. 4 small trout and one huge buzz. Patiently awaiting the offshore season...I'm hungry for mahi.

That's a great fish, 2Heart.

I haven't done any fishing since I've been living here in Europe (26mos). I need to get to Norway 'cause that's where my fishing-musician buddies are. I'm in Finland now, but won't get a chance to fish...I watched some ice fishing from a bridge a few days ago. Next month, I'm in Sweden WITH a few days off, so maybe I can get in some early-spring fishing.

CHEERS!

Thanks Peetie. Although I enjoy ice fishing, to me it's kind of like a methadone maintenance program--keeps me going until the water opens up here in the spring. Once the river I live on opens up, my family won't see much of me till the ice starts to form again. Nothing better than heading down to the dock on a summer evening with 2 fishing rods and a giant pre-mixed R&C. If you do get to go fishing in Sweden make sure you bring your camera!

Rumhead, this is a pic of me the one and only time I got to go deep sea fishing (it was out of Cozumel), and of my disappointingly small (although very shiny) catch:

Image

What you cannot see in the pic is my hideously swollen and deformed broken ankle (very drunken cruise ship dancing incident), which I walked around on untreated (except of course for extremely large quantities of rum) for 6 days in fear that I would not be allowed on the fishing charter with crutches and a cast.

I hope to be able to get out ocean fishing again some day, it was a blast...

Smatter?? Surreal?? I know you have pics.....C'mon over and show them off!

I got channel cats around here that are about that big, anything else you got to get to the river for fish that size. Of course, you can see for yourself if you get to the MWI, decent large mouth lake as well. I'm interested to see how you UP guys do fishing a strip mine lake.

Ahhh, so it is a strip mine lake, eh? Hmmmmm, never fished a strip mine lake before, although I guess you could say "If you build it I will fish". As I mentioned before, I've never been much of a bass person, but I can assure you that if it swims, I can catch it! Channel cats intrigue me, as I have seen that they can grow to enormous proportions...I hope to be able to wet a line at the MWI.

On the river here I catch a lot of walleye, pike and perch, and later in the season the bullheads move in (annoying garbage fish they are). On the big water it's salmon. My dream fish (one I have yet to catch) is a sturgeon. One day though...

some of the cats in this lake are over 3 feet. If you want bigger you gotta go to the river to get them. Still, good eating though. Pretty good assortment of fish.

I'm giving some serious thought to comming up to the UP about a week or two after the MWI and doing a spot of fishing with you guys. More into the drinkin than fishing, but i think i may be making a road trip that way.

I'm sure i'll fit right in. of course, i don't have the patience for fishing. If i could fish with a shotgun, i'd be in. I also have been known to fish with pipe bombs, but i doubt that would go over. i'm all for drinking with you though. I'd be making the trip with my dad, and he fishes the UP every year. I'd be going for the booze. Hope we can make the trip.

There's a trick (illegal about everywhere) you can do with a bale of hay -- especially good if you have lake property with a boat dock.

Buy the freshest-cut bale of hay you can find, drop it off the end of your boat dock and wait about 1/2 to 1 hour. There are tiny insects living in the hay and the bait fish will soon find them when they drift off of the hay bale. The larger fish will soon come for the bait fish.

That's scientific fishing, courtesy of Ronnie Hawkins.
