As the tournement gets started in earnest I wondered what people's thoughts were on the next couple of weeks?
Is a gold medal as important as a Stanley Cup win? I would say for the North Americans maybe not but the Europeans who haven't grown up with the legend of the Stanley Cup maybe a gold medal is the one to go for.
I love Canada (as I have previously droned on about) but in this tournament I would like Ovechkin to lead Russia to the gold in Vancouver. Get one over on Cindy in the process...

Eh, just kidding. But yo, fuck Russia, though.

The gold medal win and the Stanley Cup win are two very different things. National pride vs team pride. If Canada keeps playing like shit though then it doesn't really matter. I hate Crosby as much as the next guy, but I hate the idea of the Russians winning the gold in Canada much, much more. My buddy who loves the Caps agrees, national pride outweighs team loyalities sometimes.

Chris - not sure what you're saying there, mate, but Boozi is a good lad and I wrote that thing - whilst very drunk at about 2am so it maybe reads like a non-native English speaker. Who knows, fuck it...
Labatts - yeah, was just wondering if certain players want to win the Gold or the SC more because of nationality or age or whatever. Older players maybe remember the 1980's games with USSR and USA so will want to beat Russia. Maybe some younger players just want the SC...ara, I'm sure there was a point to this post...

I only watch Olympic hockey when it's a metaphor for two countries and economic philosophies that are at war with each other.
I hear the US team is good. Iran doesn't have a hockey team by any chance does it?

Olympic hockey is awesome. I thought this was Canada's tourney to win, but the USA boys showed them what-for tonight. The Russia-Czech Republic game this afternoon was awesome too.

Re: Olympic Hockey
Women's hockey might sound interesting buy considering the "women" are more men than actual women kind of takes the fun out of it. Besides, apart from US and Canada that are outstanding compared to the other teams, women hockey players suck and not in a good way.Wingman wrote:you know they have women's hockey? the us team gave the swedish team a spanking. just mull that one around for a while....Chimneyfish wrote:I'm a hockey fan now.
I'm looking forward to a men's hockey final with Sweden being one of the two teams battling for the gold trophy :) Very good team this year, they may not have the speed that some of the other teams have, but they are very capable technically which Finland got to taste this morning, 3-0.
Anyhow, quarters and on will be tough games.

The US impressed me the other day. I have high hopes for the Americans.
