Not another Ice-Fishing Thread

Post by Smatter Noguts »

There, there. It'll all be over soon.

Two Irish coffees and a big bloody and it's away from 5 other drunks in camp to the ice.

A dark day with above freezing temperatures. No wind. Ideal.

12 pack All-Day IPA by Founders. I don't piss on the ice. Not polite. Makes for a big bucket.

Not social, contemplative. People stop by with tales of success. I nod.

31", 10 lb Walleye caught 200 yards away. People scramble to re-rig.

A bottle of Hot Damn! brought by to sip. I pound the 4 fingers left and hand it back empty.

Nobody goes back at the fall of darkness. Pussy pressure.

BBQ Ribs at 8, Ranger, Peter and I kill a handle of Canadian House in Manhattens by the time dinner is done.

Switched to 40 Creek Heart of Gold for poker.

Laphroig for a nightcap. Slept on the floor exactly where I passed out.

Beautiful!

By all the holy spirits (whisk(e)y, rum, brandy, gin, vodka etc.), I hope, one day, to join you in some ice-fishing (and, of course, heavy drinking). In the meantime, do you think that you could upload some pictures, please?

And a damned fine thought it is, too!

All are welcome!

Surreal visited once and has the lay of the land but didn't stay to fish.

As for pictures, FastCast did a great job a couple years ago on his ice-fishing camp and my pitiful snaps of a hole in the ice don't hold a candle. Besides, Photobucket didn't seem to be working yesterday.

Probably headed out tomorrow night and plan on being more sociable; Stubb has a new killer bait that will draw dozens of people near for the Brandy shots.

Ice Fishing

Post by Smatter Noguts »

8 Degrees farenheit, 20 mile an hour wind, went out 150 yards from shore because of lake-effect snow and none of this means anything to the Euros but it was some nasty shit, and everyone was bundled up womb-like in their clamshell shanties and not socializing so it was stare down the hole and peek outside infrequently because it was a white-out zero visibility anyway, and I had a fifth of Ketel vodka and was morose cause Palinka and I used to talk about him coming over to do this, and an hour spent at a funeral visitation friday and another friend spending the last weekend of his life in a coma, and Nido dying in Texas Saturday and the Constitution of the USA with him, as well as the Great Lakes fisheries so I drained the thing and didn't notice it was dark until my brother-in-law came out to get me and we stumbled back, had a Manhattan and I passed out.

I'd shout cheers but drinking is for more than having a good time.

Yes indeed.

DRINK! is an elixir of thought, a repudiation of complacency, a fight against the inevitable dying of the light, but never the DRYing of the light. We Modern Drunkards Drink because we exist, and many of us exist only because we Drink, but we never exist simply to exist.

When existence is gone, then we hope that Drink will continue to exist.

That is simple Drinkistentialism.

Ice Fishing With Padraig

Post by Smatter Noguts »

He always said he wanted to do it badly, which he would have, and so phone conversations would always circle around to it, not just the drunken comeraderie of the fisherpeople but the dark starkness of the environment, the flat surfaces, the wonder of approaching storm fronts, the aloneness, the revelational quietness of being alone, drunk, or close with friendly faces in a 1,000,000 sq ft bar.

So I thought of him outside tonight. Ice 2" thick on Wabasis, caught nothing but a mild buzz, lifting a pint in his memory. Peace and Love to you all.
