The World Cup

Post by kowalski »

Nothing like standing crammed in a crowded pub trying to protect your drink from getting spilled, the shared agony of watching England underperform, the mad scramble to get a drink or several during half time, the toilets overflowing with piss, the odd goal - the occasional glimpse of English genius. World Cup time...

I have mentioned this subject before and know the feeling of being part of a group consciousness, all with one mindset. It is both conformist and anarchic.

"News reports out of Ghana said the country, which was experiencing a power shortage, bought power from neighboring Ivory Coast and was rationing it to make sure everyone in the country could watch Monday’s match."

I've never understood spectator sports norms. The idea of attaching national pride to people I don't know just never made sense to me. "We" won, or "we" lost, when in fact it's just an assembled group of people who won or lost defies logic. Most especially when the players are shopped from anywhere on Earth for their talent. But that's how it goes. I guess I feel some sympathy for a really poor country where everyone takes the world cup super-seriously and is devastated when they lose to a team funded by the USA. Don't even get me started on the Commercialympics. Well, I'll stop being a downer now and drink more.

Keep footballing/soccering!

The game itself is art when properly executed.

all flopping aside, I have no idea who to bet on today. Staying up all night drinking is not helping either. Pick a winner, pull the trigger ain't gonna work. Think I shoud nap and clear my head and who back to handicapping baseball 5/5 yesterday, 2/3 today... like those odds better
