I rarely do mixed drinks, but when I do, I ask the bartender to make the simplest high-grade, top shelf drink he can make. This makes almost every drink unique, and I'm never let down.

I guess my dad infused a bit too much of his Zen teachings into me.

For me the shaken and stirred argument comes down to 2 things, the spirit used and the appearance.

Vodka should be shaken with ice then strained. This let's the cold seep right through taking away some of the possible harshness of it and any possible sweetness. It also give the drink a cloudy appearance.

Gin should be stirred, keeping it clear and not too chilled. A gin martini tastes better when it's not ice cold in my opinion.
