I go to the liq at the end of the week, since Booze is strictly off limits on work nights. When I'm in there on Thurs or Fri, I'm also looking at what I want to get next Thursday or Friday.

I've always wondered...if you're not doing a straight uniform patrol shift, how do they establish who's on call at what time? I mean...how much notice do you get?

It normally rotates every two weeks if you are dealing with two or more large units. If it's just one unit, with lets say 6 people, then three will be on call one week, then the other three will be on call the following week and so on.

Once the on call rotation is up ( it's only been about a month ), then it'll be back to a glass or two a work night, tops.

Yeah...this seems to make sense.

Still, I could imagine a scenario where a hot situation arises with extraneous circumstances, there's a lack of on-duty manpower with the proper training/expertise to handle some aspect of it, someone qualified who's off-duty gets an emergency call at home to come in and they've been drinking. I could then see a serious mental/moral dilemma: an officer is needed and gets called, he's trained for this specific type of situation and he doesn't wanna let anyone down. However, while he may honestly believe he can still handle the job, he also knows that he's at least somewhat impaired.

I'm probably drifting into TV/movie la-la land with this, but could something like that ever happen?

Yep, and it has, the agency won't risk that liability so you are sidelined no matter what. They'll make do and find someone else, even if they have to call out someone from another department.

Speaking of police my girlfriend who works for MSP got me this hat and I wore it whilst bartending Sunday night. For some reason I garnered more respect than usual.

That cap will get respect nationwide, MSP is a big deal, especially when it comes to testing new police car models. They are the first and the last word when it comes to what State/Highway Patrol agencies will buy. The testing they do is top notch.

That hilarious that you mention that because I work right across the street from where they do the testing. I will get you some pics. They have a huge course with curves and then a big lot in the middle with basically a gigantic sprinkler so they can do the wet pavement testing.

Now THAT'S a ride-along I'd love to do.
