This or That

Post by TheBigCasino »

The reason i started this thread is because we've all been there.

You're in the liq store, and it all comes down between two bottles. Do I buy this bottle or that bottle.
With the wealth of knowledge we have here concerning Bourbon, Rye, Scotch, and Irish Whiskey, not to mention Wine and a plethora of beers, we could get something going here.

I've passed on - and bought bottles of good Whiskey because of the comments I've seen on this board. I was in the liq sore yesterday and passed on a bottle of Lag 12 in favor of a bottle of Bunnahabhain 12 yr.

Why? I liked it years ago, and from the posts in the Scotch thread, it's still keeping the flame, but in the spirit of this thread, next week, I'm torn

Laphroaig 18 or Lagavulin 12

this or that. what say you?
BMMS is wrong.

Tough call. They are both excellent representations of each distillery. The 48% Lappy 18 replaced the disappointingly put together Lappy 15 and has become a modern classic. The higher strength (cask strength) Laga 12 is far superior to the Laga 16 imo, and is everything you want from Lagavulin, a punchy but sophisticated peatsmoke dram. You can't lose either way, but buy both, spoil yourself.

I agree about the Laggy 12; it's generally preferable to the 16, however, I will mention that I have found a some inconsistency of taste from various bottles of the 12 in comparison to different bottles of the 16.

Interesting, you're the first person I know of that prefers the Laph 18 to the 15. I haven't had the 18 yet, but I'll take your word for it regarding it's quality.

I have had a Laga 12 once that was just a brute, with little complexity, but it was still ok, no faults anyway. I remember the 2008 Laga 12 was so good i bagged 4 bottles, top dram. The 16 has been on a steady downward curve for a few years now, i heard the Lagavulin cask management standards have been slipping of late and i think it's starting to show. Diageo, the owners, are the biggest beverage company globally and, i'm afraid to say it's all about numbers with these guys. I hope they sort it out and bring back some care and attention. The 12 yo however, is entirely matured in bourbon casks, it's difficult to get it wrong with these.

The 15 is a bit average, ok providing you're not comparing it with other Lappys, don't get me wrong, it's certainly not a bad whisky. I just thought it was a bit dull, whereas the main complaint from the reviewers was that it was lacklustre and too oily, and that it didn't reflect it's age. It's Prince Charles favourite apparently, but tbh, he has no taste.

The 18yo is a fine whisky, i may get one myself.

That's interesting, because what I'm noticing about the recent 16's is the lack of initial punch, which had always previously balanced the peat out very nicely in this whisky. It's starting to seem "too smooth" (if that makes any sense?) to my tastes.

I would say that the one that you choose depends on what you are mixng it with, and we all know that you will.

Cheap scotch with milk and a splash of Kahlua is actually quite good...or so I've been told.

In the gay bars, I hear that's called a White Swallow.
